Does Mexico have enough in the way of firepower to beat back Germany in the opening game of World Cup action?

There is very little doubt that Germany has one of the best teams in the football (soccer) world, and there is very little chance that they are not going to advance through Group F of World Cup 2018. But Mexico can take a giant step toward making it to the Round of 16 if they can come out of Sunday's match with at least a draw. The action gets started at 11 AM ET in Moscow, and BetAnySports lets you take your chances with a boatload of props, then allows you to wager in real time with Live Betting Ultra.

Of course, Germany is the defending champions, as they embarrassed Brazil (which was the host country) in the semis and then bested Argentina in the title game. Die Mannschaft has not finished worse than third in the last four World Cup competitions.

This time around they are back with a lot of veteran talent, and that includes Thomas Muller, who captured the Golden Boot in 2010 and the Silver Boot in 2014. He hasn't lost anything substantial, as evidenced by his five goals and seven assists in the qualifying stages, where Germany outscored its opponents by a 43-4 margin, in case anyone was wondering whether they were losing their edge.

Mexico hasn't been denied for quite some time, as they have gotten to the Round of 16 in each of the last six World Cup tournaments. They have not gotten beyond that point, however. Supporters of this team are happy that El Tri has a little more stability in the coaching ranks, as they have stuck with Juan Carlos Osorio for the last three years. As they went through the last World Cup cycle, they had FOUR different coaches.

In the World Cup betting odds that have been posted on this match by the folks at BetAnySports, the Germans are naturally favored:

Germany -209
Mexico +704
Draw +358

Germany -1 Goal (-129)
Mexico +1 Goal (+114)

Over 2.5 Goals -115
Under 2.5 Goals +100

Examining the German side is like looking at an All-World team. And you can have debate as to who the most outstanding player is. Toni Kroos, for example, has been a member of the FIFPro World XI (the ultimate honor) in three of the last four years. Mats Hummels is the man who steadies the defense, which doesn't get as much attention as the explosive attack. Germany may not have the best backline in the world, but it is ONE of the best. And the last line of defense is perhaps the world's premier goalkeeper. Four-time World XI member Manuel Neuer was, for a time, an injury concern with multiple foot fractures, but he says that he feels no pain as he approaches the opening game.

The biggest difference-maker, however, might be Marco Reus, who is chomping at the bit after having missed not only the 2014 World Cup but also Euro 2016 with injuries. He was felled by an ACL tear last year, but now he is back and looks very much in form, scoring seven goals in eleven games for Borussia Dortmund in an abbreviated Bundesliga campaign. With that kind of performance, it was virtually impossible for coach Joachim Low to leave him off the 23-man squad.

Mexico's World Cup bid is accompanied by quite a bit of controversy. That's because centre back Rafa Marquez was cleared to participated with the national squad, and they decided they needed him to put their best foot forward (pardon the pun). Marquez is accused of helping to launder money for a notorious Mexican drug cartel, and as a result he has had bank accounts frozen in both the U.S. and south of the border. At 39, it is questionable as to how much of his world-class ability still remains, but this is a team that attacks a lot on offense, but not make much of a presentation on the defensive end, so they literally need every man they can get, even if he comes with a dark cloud.

Germany wins here, and we could lay the -209 price in the three-way, but we'll venture into "totals" territory here, going OVER the 2.5 goals and laying a small price to do it.
