Tuesday 9/19 MLB Money Line Underdogs of the Day

Professional sports handicapper Ross Benjamin sticks his neck out and picks a trio of MLB money line underdogs on Tuesday's card. Find out why he's honed in on thse 3 picks which will produce a substantial rate of return on investment.

Rockies (Marquez) @ Giants (Cueto) 10:15 PM ET

Game# 913-914

Colorado Rockies free pickColorado Rockies pitcher German Marquez has displayed terrible form over his last 3 starts. During that time frame, Marquez posted a sizable 6.50 ERA and awful 1.90 WHIP. Marquez has made 2 career starts against San Francisco and both occurred during the past 2 seasons. The Rockies right-handed hurler collected a mammoth 11.88 ERA during those 2 appearances against San Francisco. Colorado is 3-7 against NL West teams this season when Marquez is their starter, and 36-21 versus divisional opponents with any other starting pitcher.

Since 2016, Johnny Cueto is a perfect 4-0 in his home team starts against Colorado, and he compiled a brilliant 1.44 ERA while doing so. Cueto is also a very profitable 37-17 in his career home team starts when facing an opponent with a winning record. The Giants are 7-3 this season against NL West teams with Cueto, and a dismal 16-39 against their divisional rivals with any other of their starting pitchers.

Despite the disparity in records of these 2 clubs, and Colorado trying to hold off Milwaukee for the final NL Wild Card position, one of my Tuesday MLB picks will go against conventional wisdom.

Pick: Giants +106

Boston Celtics oddsRed Sox (Pomeranz) @ Orioles (Gausman) 7:05 PM ET

Game# 917-918

I had to do a double take when I saw the MLB odds on this game. After all, these are 2 teams clearly headed in opposite directions. The money line underdog Red Sox are 7-3 over their last 10 games, and are focused on holding off a red-hot Yankees team in order to capture an AL East Division crown. Meanwhile, Baltimore has realistically played itself out of playoff contention by dropping 10 of their last 12 games.

After sustaining a brutal start to 2017, Baltimore’s Kevin Gausman has put together an impressive second half of the season. However, since 2016, Gausman has made 3 starts against Boston at Camden Yards, and had a miserable 7.64 ERA in those outings. He doesn’t figure to get much assistance from an Orioles bullpen sporting a cumulative 6.32 ERA over its previous 7 games.

Drew Pomeranz has made 3 starts against Baltimore in 2017, and had a very good 2.70 ERA during those appearances. Pomeranz has a sparkling 3.28 ERA in 29 starts this season. Conversely, Baltimore is an abysmal 11-28 in 2017 when facing American League starting pitcher with an ERA of 3.70 or less.

I’ve never been a proponent of betting trends pertaining to a specific day of the week. Nevertheless, there’s something to be said regarding Boston’s excellent 19-2 record in 2017 when playing on a Tuesday. I’ll opt for the superior team with a better starting pitcher.

Pick: Red Sox +105

Chicago Cubs betting previewCubs (Montgomery) @ Rays (Archer) 7:05 PM ET

Game# 929-930

Tampa Bay has seen their postseason hopes diminish considerable after losing 7 of its last 10 games. Chris Archer gets the start tonight and he’s been terrible over his last 3 starts. During that span, the Rays right-hander has a monster 14.14 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. Tampa Bay will be facing southpaw mike Montgomery on Tuesday, and they’ve gone a poor 17-27 this season when facing left-handed starting pitchers. The Rays bats haven’t produced of late, evidenced by their less than inspiring .652 team OPS in its previous 7 games.

The Cubs enter today riding a 6-game win streak. Chicago has averaged a robust 8.0 runs scored per game while boasting a powerful .940 team OPS throughout their last 7 outings.

Cubs starter Mike Montgomery has a shiny 2.91 ERA this season during 6 road starts. As a matter of fact, Montgomery has displayed very good form in his last 5 starts overall, and that’s proven by a stirring 1.00 WHIP through that course of time. Chicago’s bullpen has been lights out during its previous 7 games while posting an imposing 1.96 ERA.

Pick: Cubs +113
