The Detroit Lions will be looking for their first victory of the season as they play host to the New England Patriots, with Matt Patricia going up against his mentor, Bill Belichick.

The New England Patriots are not off to the most impressive start, and they have to be smarting right now from a loss they suffered to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. Now they proceed to a game against the Detroit Lions, who are probably hurting, period. The game will kick off at 8:20 PM ET from Ford Field, and will be televised by NBC. BetAnySports customers will have the opportunity for reduced juice before the game starts, and then Live Betting Ultra will offer the opportunity to place wagers in real-time once the contest gets underway.

The Patriots knew they were going up against a charge-up side last weekend, because Jacksonville is the team they beat to win the AFC title last season. And even though New England did not have Leonard Fournette to deal with, Blake Bortles had 377 yards through the air and the Jags kept turning the Pats back after grabbing a 14-0 first quarter lead. The final of 31-20 the not necessarily sent New England into a tailspin, but it may have illustrated the need to get some more firepower out on the wings. James White, a running back, was their leading receiver with 73 yards in that game, and the call was made to Josh Gordon, who five years ago led the NFL in receiving yards, but finally ran out of chances in Cleveland. Gordon has an existing hamstring situation, but the word is that if he is activated, he will see some action.

The Lions were blown out by the Jets 48-17 in the opener, as Matthew Stafford threw four interceptions. Then they had a difficult assignment, having to travel to the West Coast for a game against the San Francisco 49ers. They had a two-touchdown deficit to make up going into the fourth quarter, and they did not quite get it done, but offered some encouragement in the 30-27 defeat. Stafford threw the ball 53 times, with three touchdowns. The Lions sacked Jimmy Garoppolo six times, although they victimized themselves with ten penalties.

In the Sunday night football betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, New England is favored:

New England Patriots -6 (-115)
Detroit Lions +6 (-105)

Over 55 points -110
Under 55 points -110

It is true that with Chris Hogan their best downfield threat, New England needs to diversify a little. Tom Brady is nonetheless operating at a high level of efficiency, which 67.6% completions. There is the possibility he may not have to deal with Detroit's best defensive back, Darius Slay, who had gone into the concussion protocol. However, we go into this expecting that Slay will take the field. Even so, we are not really high on the Lions' defense, which has permitted 72.3% completions on the part of opponents. Their hope is definitely going to rest on getting some pressure on Brady and making him get rid of the ball fast. Unfortunately, that's something Brady is better at than anyone in the NFL.

Matt Patricia, who had been an assistant coach with the Patriots for 14 seasons, with six of them spent as defensive coordinator, has not yet put his stamp on the stop unit. That might take some time. But he was definitely expecting that this would become more of a balanced offense. In fact, he insisted upon it with coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who Patricia kept on board even with the regime change. It's kind of hard to judge their efforts thus far, because Detroit has been playing from behind so much, but the acquisition of LeGarrett Blount – a former Patriot – and rookie Kerryon Johnson has not prompted this team to travel over ground any more that it did before. In fact, the results are kind of lopsided – the Lions have thrown the ball 105 times yet run it just 33 times. If you are one-dimensional, that's going to make it easier for the New England defense, and Patricia knows this better than just about anybody.

If you were wondering about how Brady does against former New England assistants, he has a 61% accuracy rate over the course of his career. The real trend we want to look for is that the Patriots are famous for bouncing back after losing; they have a 25-7 ATS mark since the 2008 season, which is nothing short of outstanding. And we see no reason to buck that trend, since we know they also have the fundamental advantages here. So lay the lumber with the Patriots, who often feel at home on the road.
