Robert Griffin III will not be in the lineup for the Washington Redskins when they face off against the Baltimore Ravens, giving Kirk Cousins an opportunity to seize the starting quarterback job if he can perform well on Saturday night.

A confusing week in the nation's capital is going to conclude with some football on Saturday night, as the Washington Redskins make the short trip north for an encounter with the Baltimore Ravens. It has been a strange series of events with the team, as Robert Griffin III, who had been considered the "franchise" quarterback, at least until Jay Gruden came along, may have moved one step closer to going out the door. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, and even after the game begins, BetAnySports customers can keep the wagering alive through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.

Griffin took several hard shots in last week's game against the Detroit Lions, and there is a considerable amount of controversy as to whether Gruden left him in there too long. Some thought it was "personal," as Gruden had his differences with the former Heisman Trophy winner last season. When the coach brought his West Coast offense to the Redskins, Griffin did not take too well to it.

The punishment he suffered against the Lions caused Griffin to have a concussion, and although as late as Thursday he had been cleared by team doctors to participate in this game, that has been changed. Now it is doubtful as to whether Griffin can even make it to the season opener against Miami.

That leaves the door open for Kirk Cousins, who will get the start on Saturday night. If he seizes the #1 job in Gruden's scheme, which he seems better suited to than Griffin, you would have to wonder if the job will be his to keep.

In the reduced juice NFL odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Ravens are the home favorites:

Baltimore Ravens -4 (-105)
Washington Redskins +4 (-105)

Over 43 points -107
Under 43 points -103

One thing you can say about Cousins is that he is less susceptible to being sacked than Griffin, and he is much more of a dropback quarterback. So far in the pre-season he has completed 20 of his 26 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown.

Cousins will likely have some help from the running game here. The 'Skins picked 179 yards on the ground last week, with Trey Williams and Matt Jones compiling 96 between them. Alfred Morris should play some more here as well. And Cousins will be protected on his left flank by tackle Trent Williams.

BetAnySports customers know that he'll need it. Baltimore has a formidable pass rushing duo of Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs, and they will be seeing more action in this game than at any other time in the pre-season. It will be interesting to see how Baltimore reacts to last week's 40-17 drubbing at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles, in which the defense surrendered 476 yards.

The Ravens were really not able to move the ball in that contest until the latter stages - otherwise known as "garbage time." They trailed 30-0 at the end of three quarters, and then Bryn Renner was able to rally some points out of his team, throwing for 158 yards and a pair of scores, although such a performance probably won't do get him anything better than a place on the practice squad. Joe Flacco, the former Super Bowl MVP, was 8 for 13 with two interceptions last week.
