NFL Betting -- Dolphins Host Titans with Tannehill Back

The Tennessee Titans start over again with a new coach, and they'll play host to the Miami Dolphins as the NFL season gets into full swing.

The Miami Dolphins find themselves minus a few of their best players, but perhaps they expect that the return of their starting quarterback is going to amount to a net positive. The Tennessee Titans apparently weren't content with making the playoffs and getting past the first round, so they fired their coach and brought in another regime. That's basically the setting as these teams get together in the season opener, scheduled to begin at 1 PM ET at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Ryan Tannehill suffered a knee injury in last year's training camp that put him out for the whole season. He was a quarterback who could put up numbers but did not necessarily provide wins. And he was very slow to develop the ability to call audibles at the line of scrimmage; in fact, Joe Philbin didn't allow him to. But Adam Gase has more faith in him than that. Will Tannehill justify that faith?Miami Dolphins free pick

For the Titans, Mike Mullarkey is out and Mike Vrabel is in as the new head coach. The personality of this team will change somewhat, in that they will probably take to the air a little more. But there is still a robust backfield, so don't expect them to stray too far from that. The major objective is to get a better season out of Marcus Mariota.

Remember that the Dolphins are one year removed from being a playoff team. However, some of the personality of that squad has been removed, as Jarvis Landry, Nudamukong Suh and Mike Pouncey are in other places now.

In the NFL betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the game is a pick'em:

Under 45 points -110

The thing about Landry's absence is that he led the NFL in receptions last year, although his per-catch yardage was very low - something he attributed to the lack of imagination in the game plan. And he may be right. Now, with Davante Parker likely to miss this opener with a broken finger, Miami is short on receivers, and thus, short on explosiveness. Sure, Kenny Stills can make a big play every now and then, and Danny Amendola is bound to be productive in the slot. But this is nothing intimidating. And the Dolphins aren't going to out-muscle the Titans up front. Is there something valuable that Frank Gore can contribute? He will see spot duty, but Kenyan Drake is looked upon as the guy who can carry the load.

Titans vs DolpinsVrabel lured Matt LeFleur away from the Los Angeles Rams to be the offensive coordinator, and the consensus is that he did a great job contributing to the development of Jared Goff. So the project now is Mariota, who threw more interceptions (15) than touchdown passes (13), and it really was remarkable that the Titans could be a playoff team without him having a good season. If he is able to take steps forward - and his receiving corps, including Corey Davis, will have to take that leap with him - this offense could be difficult to deal with, since there is a dynamic backfield, now that Dion Lewis, most notable as a pass-catcher, teams up with Derrick Henry. The Dolphins picked up Robert Quinn in an attempt to bolster the pass rush, but they could be a little soft up the gut - something Suh articulated not so eloquently in an Instagram post during the pre-season.

Can Tannehill deliver big? Well, he hasn't really done so thus far. The Titans are a program on the uptick, and they are a little stronger in too many areas. There's more upside with Mariota as well. So in this pick'em situation, we'll side with Tennessee.
