The San Diego Chargers are still alive for an AFC playoff berth, while the San Francisco 49ers may have already waved the white flag, These teams get together in Santa Clara for Saturday NFL action.

For the San Francisco 49ers, it has been a bizarre season, as their head coach has been looking for a ticket out for about half the schedule, and the offensive coordinator is being called out on Twitter by the general manager's teenage daughter. What will happen to Jim Harbaugh after next week is anyone's guess, although many people in the BetAnySports audience may be wondering why he still has a job with the guys in scarlet and gold in the first place. OK, I guess we have a possible trade in the works - that explains it.

Now that they are not part of any playoff race, the Niners might be very suspect with regard to their attitude as they line up to face the San Diego Chargers in NFL betting action that will begin at 8:25 PM ET on Saturday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

The Chargers seemed to have recovered from a three-game losing streak with three consecutive victories, and they were challenging the lead of the Denver Broncos on the AFC West. But they lost at home to the Broncos and New England Patriots, which means they are batting with a number of other teams for wild card position. They are 8-6 straight-up on the season, with a mark of 6-8 against the football pointspread. San Francisco is 7-7, which puts them in third place in the NFC West, and it is conceivable that they could hit the cellar, since the Rams are only a game behind them. They are only 5-9 against the number.

In the NFL betting odds posted at BetAnySports for this special Saturday edition of pro football, the game is a pick'em affair:

Under 40.5 points -110

The Niners may have shown their true colors when they went up against the Oakland Raiders a couple of weeks ago. They could not seem to engineer anything on the offensive end, and throughout the entirety of the game's 60 minutes, it was astounding to many NFL bettors what a half-hearted effort they turned in. As far as those other games in their current three-game losing streak are concerned, it was just a matter of an inferior team running into a superior one.

Even when you look at games they won against Washington and the New York Giants, there were very definite warning signs. They had life-and-death with the Redskins for more than three quarters, even though Washington was a team in disarray. And the Giants had a chance to win at the end despite the fact that the Niners intercepted Eli Manning five times.

They have scored 56 points in a five-game period. They are in danger of finishing at 7-9, especially with this game and a season finale against Arizona upcoming. They have a coaching staff that may have been "mailing it in" for some time now, as Jim Harbaugh may be looking across the bay (Oakland) as his next destination. Greg Roman, who at one time was discussed as a future head coaching candidate, has been abysmal.

The biggest problem with this offense is that once the "surprise" of Colin Kaepernick wore off, there was nothing left to hit enemy defenses with. BetAnySports customers have witnessed a growing trend in the NFL; after teams figure out how to contain a running quarterback, that forces them to learn how to operate out of the pocket, and many of them can't. It has become clear that Kaepernick has not been able to read opposing defenses, and when NFL bettors take a look at the stats of tight end Vernon Davis (25 catches), they wonder if the guy has been injured for most of the season. There are good possession and mid-range receivers on the outside, but speed to stretch defenses is at a minimum. And if Frank Gore (804 yards) can't take control of games on the ground, the Niners can find themselves behind the eight-ball.

That's why we are skeptical with the whole argument that the 49ers may be playing for "pride." The time for that would have been the last three games, when they faced their bitter division rivals twice, along with their hated neighbors. What BetAnySports patrons saw was a laydown. And now the Chargers come into this game with an 8-6 record and one of those "must win" situations as they try to keep hope alive for the playoffs. The 49ers have not exactly exploited the home field advantage at their brand-new stadium, having suffered straight-up defeats to the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams and Seahawks, so the CHARGERS look like a very healthy possibility here, as they unquestionably have the more "interested" coaching staff and the better quarterback (Philip Rivers).
