The TCU Horned Frogs come in with a slick-shooting team and will challenge the Syracuse matchup zone in NCAA Tournament action on Friday night.

Well, some people had questioned the NCAA Tournament credentials of the Syracuse Orange, a program with a great deal of reputation which probably cashed in on some of their reputation to get an at-large bid out of the ACC. The Selection Committee did make them participate as part of the First Four, so they have already been in action in the Big Dance, defeating Arizona State. Now they move on to the next step, into the main 64-team field, as they tackle the TCU Horned Frogs in a game that begins at 9:40 PM ET at Littler Caesars Arena in Detroit. This Midwest regional game will be televised by CBS, and if you are a BetAnySports customer, you can place wagers even after gets underway, using the facilities of Live Betting Ultra.

Syracuse Orange NCAA tournament previewSyracuse is now 21-13 straight-up as a result of their victory, and the 60-56 final score indicates a pace that they are very comfortable with. Syracuse holds the ball on offense for an average of 19.5 seconds per possession, and only ten teams in the entire nation are slower than that. At the same time, this is not a good shooting team; they are outside the top 300 from both two-point range and beyond the three-point arc. They have to do some things to make up for it, and it's a good thing for Jim Boeheim that they do an outstanding job on the offensive glass, pulling down 34.8% of their missed shots.

TCU gets a lot of second chances as well, as their percentage is just below that. But the Frogs are a much better shooting team than the Orange, hitting a sizzling 40% from three-point range, which ranks than 13th the nation. This is also very much a collective approach; you won't find a lot of isolation on this TCU team, as they have the second most assist per game in the country (18.9 per game). And you have to be able to move the ball against this defensive scheme.

In the college basketball odds on this NCAA Tournament game, as they are posted at BetAnySports, TCU is laying points:

TCU Horned Frogs -4.5
Syracuse Orange +4.5

Over 136.5 points -110
Under 136.5 points -110

TCU free pickTCU is a team that has experience, having gone to the NIT last year and winning the championship with generally the same core of players they have right now. This is a special occasion for them, however, as it has been two full decades since they have appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Jamie Dixon's team is8th nationally in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency, and they shoot just a shade under 50% overall. So they are going to have an interesting time dealing with the Syracuse zone, which has allowed opponents only 44.9% shooting inside the three-point arc. And there has not been a lot of time to prepare a game plan for attacking this zone, which Boeheim has made his living off of for decades.

TCU had to navigate its way through the Big 12 this season, and they scored pretty strong non-conference victories over St. Bonaventure and Nevada. While Syracuse has the offensive talents of Tyus Battle (19.8 PPG) and Oshae Brissett (14.7 PPG, 8.8 RPG), as well as an imposing figure in the paint in Paschal Chukwu, who averages 2.7 blocks, TCU would seem to have the requisite long-range shooting to attack the matchup zone. They will send of the likes of Kenrich Williams (41%), Desmond Bayne (47%) and Kouat Noi (43%) out there to stretch out the Syracuse defenders. We think they can do enough business, and we know they can bring something to the table during post-season play, which is why we will lay the points in a small recommendation.
