The Dutch coalition parties that form the country's government have given their approval to online sports betting, but want to impose limitations on the markets offered.

According to Dutch news outlet the NLTimes, the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and Labour Party (PvdA) have suggested a wagering ban on sports events that can be easily manipulated, such as a red card in football or double fault in tennis.

The coalition parties are also keen to outlaw wagering on amateur and friendly matches, stating that players are "more susceptive to bribery and match fixing" during games where they receive little or no pay.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), the national governing body, has given its approval to the proposed adjustments, stating "the important thing is that not criminals, but players on the field, determine how the match plays out".

The Netherlands is expected to introduce a regulated online sports betting market through the Remote Gaming Bill in 2017
