Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark top the leaderboard after three rounds of the US Open, but Rory McIlroy is lurking.

Rickie Fowler has never won a major championship. But he's been close on a few occasions.

He was the runner-up at the 2018 Masters. In 2014 he had a banner year, tying for second place in both the US Open and the British Open and tying for third place in the PGA Championship.

And now he has a chance to get over the hump, as he shares the lead after 54 holes of the US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.

His co-leader is Wyndham Clark, a name not known to most casual fans, who starred at Oklahoma State and Oregon but did not make much of a mark on the PGA Tour until winning the Wells Fargo Championship this year.

Sitting in the "garden spot" right now is Rory McIlroy, who decided to put away talk about the PGA Tour-LIV merger and concentrate on getting back into the winner's circle in a major, something he has been unable to do since the PGA in 2014. He shot a 69 and is one shot behind Fowler and Clark.

Most likely on account of his championship experience, McIlroy is listed as the favorite in the US Open golf betting odds at BetOnline to take home the trophy:

Odds to Win (After Round 3)

Rory McIlroy +205
Rickie Fowler +265
Wyndham Clark +335
Scottie Scheffler +450
Xander Schauffele +3000
Dustin Johnson +4000
Harris English +4200
Bryson DeChambeau +15000
Cameron Smith +15000
Viktor Hovland +20000
Min Woo Lee +25000
Tom Kim +25000

Fowler, who, along with Xander Schauffele, shot a 62 on Thursday, tying a record for the lowest-ever round in a major, had a chance to take the lead all by himself on Saturday's 18th hole, but he missed a putt from just a few feet away, while Clark birdied.

Neither of the players were able to shake each other most of the way. But Schauffele, who began the day right up near the top, faltered early, then made something of a comeback to stay in the picture. He is five under par going into Sunday, and is five shots back.

Harris English hasn't done very much in the majors, except for the US Open. He was fourth in 2020 and third in 2021. And he has a chance to be in the top five again, at the very least. But it won't happen if he bogeys four holes on the back nine, as he did on Saturday. On the 18th he completely fanned on a shot out of the rough near the green.

Scottie Scheffler is a guy who figured to be in the hunt prior to the start of the tournament, because of the control he is able to have over his golf ball. Not only is he ranked #1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, he is also #1 on the PGA Tour in Greens in Regulation.

He seemed to be having a rather quiet time of it until he hit an approach shot on the par 4 seventeenth that went right into the hole for an eagle. He followed that with a birdie on 18 to finish the round with a 68, which places him at -7. So he is in striking distance.

Fowler is hardly in the driver's seat, and it remains to be seen whether missing that easy putt right at the end will have a substantial psychological carry-over effect in Sunday's final round.
