With the Barstool Sportsbook app going live and the NFL starting its season, Pennsylvania set a new state record for total sports handle in September with $462.79 million, a 26.8% increase over the mark it set just last month.

Along with New Jersey’s U.S. record of $748.6 million, which was announced Thursday and beat its August national record by 12.1%, the two neighboring states combined for more than $1.2 billion in total sports handle in September. With records being set by nearly every state, the total U.S. sports betting handle in September could reach $3 billion for the first time.

The previous high in Pennsylvania sports betting handle was August’s $365 million. That had bested the mark of $348.4 million registered in January 2020. The September mark, which was announced by Pennsylvania on Friday, was helped by the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles starting their seasons.

Thanks to online Pennsylvania sportsbooks, mobile sports wagering in September was $414.1 million or 89.5% of the market. August saw $321.6 million in mobile sports betting handle — 88.1% of the market.

Top PA Sportsbooks by Handle
Pennsylvania is the first state where the Barstool Sportsbook app is available. It launched on Sept. 18 in partnership with Penn National Gaming and had a big first weekend. Between Sept. 18-20, the Barstool Sportsbook app was downloaded more than 63,000 times, averaging 21,000 downloads a day during the Friday through Sunday period after going live.

Penn National Casino outside of Harrisburg had a handle of $32,335,584 for September aided by the start of Bartstool. Almost $30 million of the total handle was online via the Barstool app.

Valley Forge Casino Resort in Upper Merion Township had $171,184,786 bet in September after having $149,187,263 in August handle.

Other sports wagering handle numbers for Pennsylvania casinos: Meadows, $118,790,269 in September after $88,248,545 in August; Rivers Philadelphia, $31,643,398 in September ($32,066,001 in August); Rivers Pittsburgh, $32,368,960 in September ($25,344,591 in August) and Mount Airy, $24,983,955 ($22,717,893 in August.

States Surge in Sports Betting Handle
The numbers put up by New Jersey and Pennsylvania continued the strong reports from other states for September:

Indiana saw a state record $207.45 million in September sports handle. That was a 22.7% increase from August’s $169.02 million.

Iowa had $72.4 million bet in September, up 43.9% from August’s $50.3 million.

West Virginia’s $76.9 million for September was an increase of 90.3% over August’s $40.4 million.

Colorado and Nevada will announce their September figures later this month.

Other Gaming Numbers Strong
Other key numbers from the September report:

Pennsylvania’s online poker sites saw Mount Airy post revenue of $2,376,045 after $2,729,199 in August. Poker rooms at Mount Airy and Mohegan Sun Pocono reopened Friday.
Gross sports betting revenue was $6,269,883, down 65.7% over August’s $18,274,075. 
The online handle was $414,100,359, up 28.8 over August’s $321,554,141.
Table games revenue was $59,159,258, down 9.2%over $65,119,689 in August.
The interactive slots handle in September was $1,064,839,995 after having $1,060,557,374 in August, a modest 0.4% increase.
The interactive banking tables handle in September was $926,818,379, up 8.5% over August’s $812,483,414.
