Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie wished that they were competing for more laurels than they will be on Sunday night at the Oscars.

Dos one good snub deserve another? That is essentially the question that is being put before BetOnline customers as they await the Academy Awards ceremony.

They are offering 3-1 odds (+300) that either director Greta Gerwig OR lead actress Margot Robbie will be a no-show for the Oscar ceremony, which takes place on Sunday night.

If you follow these kinds of things, you know that, first of all, the film has grossed over $1.4 billion, which represents a profit of over a billion dollars. And that Gerwig, who helmed this blockbuster, was left out of the final list of five contenders for Best Director, despite universal praise.

Richard Brody, a film critic from The New Yorker, called the picture "brilliant, beautiful and fun as hell."

Robbie, who, considering the nature of the material, couldn't have had an easy task, was not one of the five actresses nominated. Those nods went to Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Sandra Huller ("Anatomy of a Fall"), Carey Mulligan ("Maestro"), Annette Bening ("Nyad") and Emma Stone ("Poor Things"). Among those, Stone is a previous winner, while Bening has been nominated five times for an Oscar without winning. It's Mulligan's third nomination as she vies for her first win. It's Huller's first nomination, and the same can be said for Gladstone, who played, well, Paul Giamatti's stepmother in the Showtime series "Billions."

Should Robbie have been able to fit in there somewhere?

She was included as a nominee for the Golden Globes, as was Gerwig, although they didn't win. However, the movie did take home a newly-created award for "Cinematic and Box Office Achievement," which makes it a little like the People's Choice Award.

The Associated Press reporter says that Gerwig's being left out of Oscar contention for Best Director was "one of the biggest shocks in recent memory."

Ryan Gosling, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor, issued a statement that asserted there would be no movie at all without Gerwig and Robbie. That obviously goes without saying.

Best Supporting Actress nominee America Ferrera, also of "Ugly Betty" fame, reacted to Robbie's snub by saying that "Perhaps people got fooled into thinking that the work seems easy".

Robbie being ignored was a surprise to me, because with all the people who were making forecasts in advance, she was included right near the top of the favorites list. And it's not as if the Academy has something against her; after all, they have nominated her for acting roles twice before (I Tonya, Bombshell).

It has been suggested that perhaps, because of the subject matter itself, the Academy voters might have not taken the film seriously enough, and that in turn, Robbie and Gerwig themselves may not have been taken seriously enough. Those who have examined the "snubs" are of the opinion that "Barbie" was looked upon as little more than a box-office blockbuster.

I'm sure that both Gerwig and Robbie were upset, but before we break out the world's smallest violin, remember that there are nominations in seven different categories, including two Best Original Song nominees:

Best Picture - David Heyman, Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Robbie Brenner
Best Supporting Actor - Ryan Gosling
Best Supporting Actress - America Ferrera
Best Adapted Screenplay - Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach
Best Costume Design - Jacqueline Durran
Best Original Song - "I'm Just Ken" – Music and Lyrics by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt
and "What Was I Made For?" – Music and Lyrics by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell
Best Production Design - Production Design: Sarah Greenwood; Set Decoration: Katie Spencer

So as you can see, Robbie is indeed up for an Oscar - as one of the producers of a Best Picture nominee. Gerwig is up for Best Adapted Screenplay along with her husband, Noah Baumbach.

So wouldn't you say there's enough reason to show up? I certainly think so, which makes the +300 prop a non-starter.
