The San Diego Padres send Michael Wacha to the mound on Monday night to try to end the San Francisco Giants' long win streak.

The San Francisco Giants are on a seven-game winning streak that has brought them into contention in the National League West. The San Diego Padres, who were one step away from the World Series last season, are struggling top get to the .500 mark, although they have some of the best talent in the league.

Can the Giants sustain this recent success? We'll see. On Monday night they take on the Padres at Oracle Park in a game that begins at 9:45 PM ET.

In the MLB baseball betting odds that have been established on this game by the folks at BetOnline, the Padres are actually the road favorites:

San Diego Padres (Wacha) -114
San Francisco Giants (Walker) +104

Over 8.5 Runs -120
Under 8.5 Runs +100

And on the run line.....

Padres -1.5 Runs +138
Giants +1.5 Runs -158

The Giants have just completed sweeps of the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers and during these last seven games, they have scored fewer than seven runs only once, reaching double figures three times.

On Sunday they got seven solid innings of pitching out of Logan Webb and beat the Dodgers 7-3. In the process they climbed into second place in the NL West, just 3.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks. They've averaged 9.3 runs in the last seven games.

The Padres have won seven out of their last ten, and just took two of three from the Tampa Bay Rays, who have the best record in Major League Baseball.

These teams played a short two-game set at the end of April. San Diego won both games, by scores of 16-11 and 6-4.

Michael Wacha (7-2, 2.89 ERA) has been a very reliable pitcher for the Padres, and he takes the mound for them tonight. The Giants go with Ryan Walker (2-0, 1.23 ERA), who is primarily a relief pitcher.

Walker has appeared in eleven games, covering 14-2/3 innings. He's yielded just two earned runs and has an outstanding 15-2 ratio of strikeouts to walks. he registered a win in his major league debut, giving up three hits in one inning but not allowing a run to cross the plate.

This came after a successful stint at Triple-A Sacramento, where he posted a 0.89 ERA, 0.85 WHIP in 20-1/3 innings.

In this particular case he is serving as an "opener," ready to pitch an inning or so, with the expectation that Sean Manaea will take over from there.

Walker played his college ball at Washington State, then was chosen in the 31st round by the Giants in the 2018 draft.

Walker's control thus far looks a lot better than it was at Richmond last season, as he issued 24 free passes in 45-2/3 frames.

Wacha was a member of the National League in 2015 when he posted a 17-7 record for the Cardinals. He then spent several struggling seasons before landing in Boston last season. He went 11-2 with a 3.32 ERA for the Red Sox. In the off-season, we went to the Padres in free agency, and he's continued with the positive momentum.

Wacha is on track to recording the best WHIP ratio of his career.

In his last seven starts, covering 43-1/3 innings, he's allowed just five runs on 23 hits and two home runs. He has not faced San Francisco as a starter since the 2019 season.

Manaea has a 5.84 ERA and 1.378 WHIP ratio; he's given up 3.8 walks and 1.5 homers per nine innings. So it could be shaky beyond the first or second inning.

All good things must come to an end. And the atmosphere may be rigjht for the Padres to slow down thisd San Fran express and chalk up a Monday win.
