The DC Defenders will try to bounce back from two horrific losses as they face the St. Louis BattleHawks in the XFL on Sunday afternoon.

To borrow a line from "I Love Lucy," the DC Defenders have some splainin' to do. After the first two games, when they had established themselves as a real contender for the XFL title, they have simply dropped off the face of the earth in these last two contests. So in terms of trending, they are clearly going in the opposite direction of Sunday's opponent, the St. Louis BattleHawks, who are at the moment the team to beat in the Eastern Conference.

These squads will get together on Sunday night a 9 PM ET at Audi Field in the nation's capital. And BetAnySports patrons who are looking for some extra thrills can find them as they partake in real-time wagering through Sports Betting Ultra.

Cardale Jones, who looked like Daunte Culpepper getting the ball down the field to a very capable group of wideouts, has suddenly completed just 45% of his passes with five interceptions over the last two games. And there appears to be some tumult on the DC sidelines. Jones was heard asking the staff to bench receiver DeAndre Thompkins last week, as the team got beat 25-0 by the previously winless Tampa Bay Vipers. Jones looked unsure of himself, though, and eventually he himself was taken out of the game in favor of Tyree Jackson, the University of Buffalo star who spent some time on the practice squad of the Bills.

The feeling here is that if Jones struggles early, coach Pep Hamilton may not hesitate to pull the trigger on a move to Jackson. A loss here could more or less put the Defenders out of contention for the conference title.

In the XFL betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the visitors are the favorites::

St. Louis BattleHawks -5.5
DC Defenders +5.5

Over 38 points -110
Under 38 points -110

One thing you can count on about the BattleHawks is that they are going to run first, no matter what. And that makes them kind of unique in this league. And even if they don't have a lot of success with it, they are going to continue pounding the rock, so to speak. In fact, on 73 offensive snaps against Seattle last week, they had 46 running plays. And it's not as if the game was out of reach; they only won it by a 23-16 margin. So you know what the game plan is.

Jordan Ta'Amu has been a revelation at quarterback. Ta'Amu has completed 75% of his passes this season, and he has also done more than enough with his legs, accounting for 31% of the team's rushing yards. So even though St. Louis has an offense that, to some people, may seem stuck in the mud, they are actually quite dynamic. Ta'Amu only started one full season at Ole Miss, but left quite an impression, finishing second in the SEC in passing yardage. He is definitely one of this league's "discoveries."

Even though they have been outscored 64-9 over the last two games, the Defenders are trying to be encouraged, because they are returning home to Audi Field, where the relatively infancy (it's only a 20,000-seat venue) is something that, in their opinion, gives them an advantage.

If DC is going to contend in this game, it's likely going to have to come on the offensive end. So while we know that the BattleHawks' offensive strategy is something that can kill clock, it can also be extremely effective against a DC team that allowed TWO 100-yard rushers last week. .And we also know that the upward movement of the line doesn't leave enough room for value. Meanwhile, the total has come down in our direction, so we'll go that way. OVER.
