The Top Contenders

Minnesota Vikings (-4.5) at Carolina Panthers

We have survived the first three weeks of the season using picks simply to stay alive and advance. But, now that we are firmly entrenched in the Jazz Sports Survivor Contest, its time to look for an under-the-radar team to pick, and we are looking at the Minnesota Vikings. Both Minnesota and Carolina come into this game winless, with the Vikings in desperation mode right now. They lead the league in turnovers with nine, yet still have lost by a just a combined 13 points in their three losses. Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell said he would "put other guys in the game that have ball security" if the trend continues. Luckily for Minnesota, Carolina has come up with just two interceptions and has forced zero fumbles so far in 2023.

Andy Dalton passed for 361 yards in an inefficient performance last week vs. Seattle and rookie Bryce Young looks to be back under center for this game. However, that is not the great news for Panthers' fans as the first overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft has had two lackluster outings as a Panther. In fact, his average of 4.2 yards per passing attempt through his first two games is the third-worst in NFL history. Leading rusher Miles Sanders is listed as questionable for Sunday, with a groin injury that has was limited him a t practice all week. Regardless of the QB, the Panthers don't have the firepower to keep up.

.The Vikings have lost three one-score games, despite the fact that Kirk Cousins ranks third in the NFL in passer rating at 108.2. Look for Cousins to torch the Panthers struggling defense and advance to Week 5.

Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers (-14)

The I-just-want-to-stay-alive pick is the San Francisco 49ers. They are arguably one of the two or three best teams in the NFL and have a 3-0 record to prove it. The Cardinals have been a bit tougher than many thought before the season started with two hard-fought, close losses before their upset win last week vs the Cowboys, which sunk tens of thousands of Survivor pool entries. The Niners are the biggest favorites of the season so far laying 14 points on the odds board at Jazz Sports. They come off of an extra three-days rest, while the Cardinals are riding high from their upset win last week. San Francisco is in the top four in yards per play on offense and top three in yards per play allowed on defense. Though the Cardinals have covered in all three games in 2023, this is a win or go home pool and we can't see the Niners going down this week at home vs. Arizona. Take the 49ers as the safest of safe picks in Week 4.

Making the Decision

Ultimately, the decision between the Minnesota Vikings and the San Francisco 49ers comes down to personal preference and individual strategy. I have already used the Cowboys, Ravens and Chiefs and would like to hold on to the 49ers for later in the season, though that strategy has bitten me in years past. The Vikings are hopeful to still get into the NFL playoffs, so this game is a must, must win, but they are no 'lock'. It's essential to consider your own risk tolerance and assess the potential rewards of each pick.
