UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifier Preview and Betting Tips - Spain vs. Malta

Preview and prediction for the Euro 2020 qualifier between Spain and Malta.

The Euros - 2020 Preview

The final rounds of the Euro 2020 qualifiers kick off this week and with so much at stake, locking up a bid to the next summer's tournament will be a top priority. Only Group I has been determined thus far, with Belgium and Russia sealing their spots in England, with many of the other participants in the driver's seat, there is still plenty of work to be done over the next six days.

The Group F table offers plenty of intrigue, with Romania, Sweden and Spain all in contention to top the standings. The top three countries in the standings have no room for error, so the necessity to grab all three points will be at an all-time high.

Spain's Redemption Tour

Spain will enter the match day as the favorites to progress to England next summer. With a full five-point lead over their closest competitor, "La Furia Roja" understands they have no room for error if they want to grab one of the top seeds in the Euro draw.

Robert Moreno was thrust into the managerial position after the sudden resignation of Luis Enrique due to the death of his daughter. The young Spanish headman has been handed a large responsibility to lead this proud national team back to championship glory. Spain has faltered in large tournaments over the past six years since capturing the Euro's title in 2012.

The Spanish outfit has taken on a more youthful approach over the past few years, with many of the old guard moving down the pecking order, while the Red Fury introduces new faces in the starting eleven.

Moreno is likely to send out the combination of Alvaro Morata and Paco Alcacer to lead the front-line. Morata comes in having scored a goal in his last six club matches with Atletico Madrid, while Alcacer has enjoyed International duty. The Borussia Dortmund danger-man scored six goals over his last four outings with the country.

The back-end continues to be anchored by David DeGea. The Manchester United net-minder remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world and provides the Spaniards with a sure-handed rock in between the sticks.

Spain enters Friday matchup having won 14 of their last 16 Euro matches. La Furia Roja was held to a 0-2 scoreline against this same Malta side earlier in the year and should offer additional motivation to have a strong showing.

Malta has less to be excited for as the opening whistle arrives. The visitors currently occupy the bottom spot in the table, while going to winless over their last seven Euro qualifier matches.

The Maltese Attempt To Play Spoiler

Raymond Farrugia's men have found finding the back of the net a colossal accomplishment. The Falcons travel to Spain having only netted two goals during qualifiers, with Kyrian Nwoko producing one of those for his national team. Nwoko will once again lead the line for this tiny nation, while team captain Michael Mifsud attempts to lend a helping hand, as the large underdogs attempt to pull the ultimate shocker.

Malta is given little hope to top the Red Fury on their own soil, having lost their last seven international meetings against Spain, the visitors hope to keep this match respectful by the end of 90 minutes.

Spain vs. Malta - Match Prediction

Spain should be motivated to have a strong showing in front of their home supporters. The three-time European champs have been less than impressive over the last year, and even though they currently top the table, the Red Fury is still coming off the humiliation of the World Cup last summer.

The Spaniards are undefeated during this current Euro run, producing an overall record of 6-2-0 while scoring 19 goals for an average of 2.4 per outing. The hosts have also enjoyed this particular matchup, holding an undefeated record over the Maltese since 1983, and this spot sets up for the home side once again.

La Furia Roja are certain to control over 75% possession of the ball on Friday night, spending the bulk of the match on Malta's side of the pitch, where they are certain to create a ton of shots on goal, using a ton of service into the box, where their dynamic goal scorers will look to get on the end of pinpoint passing.

Malta started the Euro in a convincing manner, grabbing an opening day winner, but since the cellar dwellers have failed to recapture their winning ways. The minnows have also found keeping clean sheets a struggle, conceding 18 goals during that unimpressive span, and that number seems destined to increase after Friday night's contest.

I anticipate the Maltese to sit back and play their traditional guard, putting all ten men in front of goal, hoping to frustrate Spain, and then springing out on the counter-attack, or producing a goal through a set-piece, or possible penalty kick situation.

Spain has a huge advantage in this particular fixture. I expect a dominant performance from the opening half, after being held to only two goals to this same Malta side earlier in the campaign. I see a more aggressive nature out of this young core, as they attempt to separate themselves in the table, and through goal differential.
