Mike White will make another start at quarterback for the New York Jets as they take on the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings.

Preview and pick for Jets at Vikings

The New York Jets are still contenders for a playoff spot, and they have had a shaky quarterback situation all season long. BetAnySports customers are well aware that they thought they may have solved that puzzle for the future when they drafted Zack Wilson last year.

But we wonder how sure they are of that. Wilson started the season on injured reserve, and he was not too effective when he came back into the lineup. The nadir happened against the Patriots, when he not only couldn't move the team, but got sacked six times, with twelve yards passing in the second half.

Jets Free pickHead coach Robert Saleh carefully considered his options, and then decided to bench Wilson. Perhaps this was a lesson, or a test to see how Wilson could handle it. At the same time, this is a team that has a chance to make the playoffs. And if you are sitting around waiting for the BYU product to develop as a legitimate NFL quarterback, you might be sacrificing a chance to make the postseason for a franchise that has done that rarely of late.

So Saleh turned to Mike White against the Chicago Bears last week. White is not very experienced, but he may be more capable of providing a spark to the offense. Saleh used Joe Flacco as the starter when Wilson was injured at the outset of the season. And Flacco is serviceable as a backup; after all, he is a former Super Bowl MVP.

But maybe a move to White tells us something else; perhaps that the Jets are looking for an alternative to Wilson over a long period of time, if need be. They are not going to admit that to you, of course. No management team is going to cop to having failed with the #2 overall pick in a draft until it becomes patently obvious.

As handicappers, we are thinking of the here and now. And White gave us an indication that he is the Jets' guy of the "here and now." Still, there's danger. We'll discuss.

The Jets, who are 7-4 (SU & ATS) and one game behind Buffalo and Miami in the AFC East, take a trip to the Twin Cities on Sunday to tackle the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings (9-2 SU, 5-5-1 ATS), Kickoff is set for 1 PM ET.

In the NFL betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Vikings are the favorites:

Minnesota Vikings -3 (-105)
New York Jets       +3 (-115)

Over 44.5 Points -110
Under 44.5 Points -110

With 315 yards through the air and three touchdown passes, White was just what the doctor ordered. He provided a great prescription last season when he made his first NFL start, with 405 yards against Cincinnati, making him the first QB to debut with 400+ yards since Cam Newton.

But things imploded for him not long after that. He tossed four interceptions against the Buffalo Bills, and that was the end for him.

Vikings Jets predictionWhite is making decisions sooner than Wilson did. And that's important, because the offensive line, which has been really banged up, allowed only two pressures. So maybe he can make up for what otherwise might be a deficiency.

And while Wilson only threw a few TD passes, White seems to be the guy who was able to wake up rookie standout Garrett Wilson, who caught two touchdowns and fell just five yards shy of 100.

Sure, it remains to be seen whether White will hold the fort down. And a solution at the running back position has to be found. James Robinson was a healthy scratch, and Michael Carter hasn't followed up what he did as a rookie. Bam Knight, a first-year man, did something encouraging, with 69 yards.

The connection between Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson is going to be a challenge for this Jets secondary, which really didn't get that against Trevor Siemian or Mac Jones the last couple of games. But rookie Sauce Gardner is now the #1-rated cornerback by the highly respected Pro Football Focus. And we've got news for you; the Jets also have #12 and #13 in that category as well.

Gang Green can hang here. Take the points.
