The Gonzaga Bulldogs of the West Coast Conference take on the Kansas Jayhawks of the Big 12 Conference in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs used to be the only team really worth looking at in the West Coast Conference. However, as BetOnline patrons have discovered, they have relinquished, for the time being, the championship in that league, to Saint Mary's, which beat them two out of three this season.

But isn't it funny how things can change? Saint Mary's just suffered an upset loss to Grand Canyon, which most people probably haven't even heard of unless they wanted to go to college online. And Gonzaga has a chance to punch its ticket to the Sweet Sixteen if it can get by the Kansas Jayhawks in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament (3:15 PM ET in Salt Lake City).

Here are the NCAA Tournament odds on that game, as they have been posted at BetOnline:

Gonzaga Bulldogs -3.5
Kansas Jayhawks +3.5

Over 152.5 Points -110
Under 152.5 Points -110

Kansas had lost four of its last five coming into the Big Dance, and they were a little banged up. We'll get to that in a second. They were expected by some to have a breather as they lined up against Samford (who most people also haven't heard of) in the opening round.

Well, they had a 22-point second half lead, but they let their opponent chip away at it, to the point where Samford actually had an opportunity to take the lead with a triple. Ultimately that didn't happen, but Kansas had to really sweat bullets on the way to a 93-89 victory.

After the game, center Hunter Dickinson was asked about the difficulty of this win, which was obviously no walk in the park. He replied by talking about how "resilient" his team was.

Nonsense. These guys are soft.

We have talked before about how the Jayhawks sometimes come apart when they are away from Allen Fieldhouse, and this may have been such as case.

Dickinson had a MAJOR size advantage against anyone on the Samford side who tried to guard him, and consequently he made nine of 13 shots from the field. But he could have / should have done more.

He has been playing with a shoulder injury, but had pronounced himself just fine - a sentiment that was echoed by coach Bill Self.

Kevin McCullar isn't just fine. The potential first-round NBA pick, who is probably the best all-around player Kansas has, will not play at all in the tournament because of a bone bruise on his knee. And these guys are not as efficient without him, on either end.

It has been pointed out that Dickinson is a 57% shooter when he has McCullar in the lineup to distract the opposition and 43% when he doesn't.

Gonzaga runs a rather proficient offense, ranked eighth in the country in KenPom's efficiency ratings. And it is worth noting that they are not three-point bombers. Rather, they do most of their work on the inside. The 'Zags take 68.5% of their field goal attempts inside the arc, and they hit better than 58% of those, which places them in the top ten in the country in that category.

And much of the pressure to get that done, which has been the province of Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren over the last couple of seasons, is primarily in the hands of Graham Ike, the 6-9, 245-pound transfer from Wyoming who has been one of the more dominant big men in the WCC this season. Ike can put then ball in the hoop; indeed, he went through a stretch late in the season where he tallied 167 points in seven games (just over 23 per contest). He was best in the "True Shooting" category in the conference, as well as being one of the top ten rebounders, both offensively and defensively. He had 16 points and ten rebounds in the opening round win over McNeese State (or just "McNeese," if you prefer).

Ike is going to offer Dickinson a bigger challenge from a defensive standpoint. And maybe he gets Hunter in foul trouble too. Discount Gonzaga at your own risk; sure, they'd rather be back in Spokane playing in the retgional out there. But they'll be "just fine" in Salt Lake City covering this pointspread.
