Michael Penix Jr. is the Heisman favorite, and he'll answer the bell on Satrurday night in Seattle as the Washington Huskies play host to the ASU Sun Devils.

The calls are getting a little closer for the Washington Huskies. A week after a narrow escape against an Arizona squad that was tougher than most people expected, there was the last-minute rabbit they pulled out of a hat against Oregon, which produced a 36-33 win which kept their season blemished.

Now they are ranked #5 in the country, according to the latest Associated Press poll. And their quarterback is front and center when it comes to the race for the Heisman Trophy.

Michael Penix Jr. will be the focus of attention for U-Dub, which has hopes for the college football playoff that are very much alive. They need to have some focus themselves as they take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in a Pac 12 game that begins at 10:30 PM ET in Seattle.

In the college football betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetOnline, the Huskies are big favorites:

Washington Huskies -28
Arizona State Sun Devils +28

Over 60 Points -100
Under 60 points -110

Penix put up decent numbers when he was the quarterback at Indiana, though they were hardly overwhelming. But when the southpaw used the transfer portal to move to the Pacific Northwest, he really thrived in Kalen DeBoer's offense.

Last season, after spending four years at IU, he tallied 4641 yards and 31 touchdowns with the Huskies. This year he is 72% accurate, with 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He's thrown for an average of 10.7 yards per attempt. Against Oregon, another ranked team, he threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns.

He may pass last year's yardage total, but the point is that his team remains undefeated, and as long as U-Dub is in the running for the Pac 12 championship and a berth in the four-team playoff, he is going to be the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. And that would spoil the efforts of Caleb Williams, the USC quarterback who won last year's award. There will be a showdown between the two on November 4th.

So the question here is whether the Sun Devils can offer enough in the way of resistance. If we are talking about defense against the pass, ASU allows just 6.4 yards per attempt, which is outstanding. And if the Huskies want to funnel some action into the run game, Arizona State has permitted just 3.6 yards per carry. Of course, it should be mentioned that the secondary has not intercepted a pass.... all season. But still, this may not be a walk in the park for Penix.

The problem for ASU is that the offense has been so dreadful. While Washington leads the nation in yards per play (8.4), Arizona State is at just 4.5. So keeping the defense off the field is going to be a major challenge for coach Kenny Dillingham.

At this point in the season, are we looking for Penix to be padding his stats? Well, maybe, if that is what is going to get him closer to where he wants to be.

The over-under for his passing yards is 345.5, with a price of -114 on either side of that one. This game may not wind up being all that close, and an interesting question might involve whether DeBoer would move toward the ground attack at some juncture in the second half.

We feel more comfortable on the "under" side of that passing yards prop.
