Giants Win is Not as Painful For Offshore Bookmakers

We posted several articles early this week with quotes from Nevada sportsbooks such as “this was the worst loss in Super Bowl history” and that a “win by Giants deemed worst-case scenario”. However, after a week-long poll amongst offshore gamblers and an informal questionnaire to several offshore sportsbooks the hit does not appear to be as big for offshore sportsbooks . . . depending upon who you talk to.

One of the large ‘square shops’ simply replied to our email questionnaire with “OUCH!” But, another one of the biggest bookmakers in Costa Rica told us that it was “a good day, not a great day.”

Over 100 OSGA visitors completed a poll asking how they did on the Super Bowl. Over a third answered “I Lost.” The next largest response, with another 33% of the vote, was from players who won over $100 but less than $500. Still, slightly over 20% responded that they had cashed over $1000 on the Big Game.

But was this the worst Super Bowl ever? Arguable offshore as opposed to the Nevada reports, as over half of the sportsbooks offshore responded that they either broke even or made a smal bit of change. It appears that teasers really helped out the offshore sportsbooks, with nearly 40% of the books answering that the teasers on New England and the totals teasers evened out much of the money line action on the Giants.

Here are some of the comments that we got back from the Caribbean to Costa Rica:
– “definitely didn’t win but it wasn’t as bad as I expected”
– “I was fully expecting to lose big considering that we were 3-1 on tickets in favor of the Giants, but we won one side of the Teasers and the prop bets on the Pat’s offensive players helped.”
– “That last Giant TD wasn’t pretty as it paid all the NY money line bets. However, what saved us was the NE straight bets, NE Teasers, Over straight bets, Over Teasers.”
– “Our action went mainly sideways (meaning no house win or loss) due to totals, but mostly due to teasers.”

Still, as we were watching the game, we could hear a collective groan coming from sportsbooks around the globe as Plaxico grabbed that winning score . . .
