Quinton Flowers has left the Tampa Bay Vipers, leaving the team's quarterback situation in a position of increased uncertainty.

The Tampa Bay Vipers may have an offensive "guru" in head coach Marc Trestman, but you can't do a whole lot on offense unless you get some consistent play at the quarterback position. That is something the team does not have, and it has shown as the club has gotten off to an 0-3 start.

For the first two games, they did not cross the goal line at all. So it was something of a relief that they were able to tally 27 points against the Houston Roughnecks last week. The team converted half of their third down situations (9 of 18) and was tied with the XFL's only undefeated team at the half.

They eventually lost by a touchdown as the defense gave up 417 yards. But maybe there was some cause for encouragement. And they are trying to being some momentum into Sunday night's game against the DC Defenders (7 PM ET, ESPN2) at their own Raymond James Stadium. Quinton Flowers started out in camp as a running back - viewed as a player who could potentially be a "slash." In other words, he could be a back, or a wide receiver, or even a quarterback, which is the position he played at neighboring South Florida, where he became the all-time total offense leader in the American Athletic Conference.

Aaron Murray was the starting quarterback at the outset of the season, who hurt his foot on the season opener. Murray had been a little shaky in the AAF, and continued that in the XFL up until his injury. When it came time to replace him, Trestman chose Taylor Cornelius, a one-year starter at Oklahoma State, and added that Flowers would see time at the position.

So far, Flowers has completed eight of 15 passes and run 16 times for 78 yards. He also threw a pick-six.

And now the team is without him, as he has left the Vipers, for "personal reasons." Well, we guess he's right about that. So even though Murray may not be quite ready to play a full game, he is the backup on Sunday, while Cornelius - who is 55% accurate with just one TD pass - gets another start.

Here are the XFL odds on that game - with reduced juice - from BetAnySports:

DC Defenders -5 (-105)
Tampa Bay Vipers +5 (-105)

Over 44 points (-105)
Under 44 points (-105)

Flowers' departure has been a mystery to most people, but what has been reported the most - and what appears to make sense - is that he was dissatisfied with his playing time at QB. He probably felt as if he should have been given more of a chance to compete with Cornelius, and perhaps even Murray. He had been outspoken about being "limited" in too many ways.

When a "dual threat' quarterback goes from college to the pros, there is always the chance that they will be relegated to another position, and that might be part of the picture. Whatever it was, Flowers was miffed enough to leave.

He reportedly wants a trade to another team, and it is quite possible that there is another place for him. Seattle just inserted another South Florida quarterback with mobility - BJ Daniels - so that door may be closed. But no one really knows what's going to happen in the coming weeks.

One has to wonder how people outside the Vipers are looking at this After all, players come to the XFL seeking an opportunity to play football, with the possibility of moving up to the NFL as a result. Not only is Flowers potentially removing himself from exposure to scouts at the "next level," he may also be sending a toxic message to them - that he is perhaps too much of a "headache" for them to deal with because of the powder he has taken.

Trestman has made it clear that the door was open for Flowers to return.

For now, his absence leaves the Vipers in a rough pocket, because they don't really have a 100% healthy backup this week, or a change of pace guy. They have Cornelius, and that probably won't be enough to deal with a DC team that is thirsting to rehabilitate itself after last week's loss to L.A. And this vulnerability is reflected in the line movement, where the number has moved at least 2-1/2 points in the last couple of days and may move some more before the kickoff.
