Pennsylvanians bet more than $30M online, win big on Big Red

“We saw well over $30 million in wagers being placed,” said Doug Harbach, director of communications for the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When it comes to gambling, you can bet that “the house always wins” — well, most of the time.

Sports bettors cleaned up on Super Bowl LIV, especially in Pennsylvania. This was the first year Pennsylvania gamblers could place a bet online.

“We saw well over $30 million in wagers being placed,” said Doug Harbach, director of communications for the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

Most of the money was placed on Kansas City — resulting in about $3 million in losses for casinos and sportsbooks.

About 80 percent of the bets were placed online. Overall, about 200,000 people got in on the action.

“And that's double what we would see on any given NFL Sunday,” Harbach added.

He expects to see even more action next year.

“We continue to see a ramp up month after month in the sports wagering,” he said. “Certainly, we're still somewhere in the middle of getting this market up and running.”

Gamblers in New Jersey bet $54.2 million on the big game, which was up from $35 million last year. Casinos and sportsbooks in the Garden State reported losses of about $4.3 million after the Chiefs won.
