NY sports betting revenue doubles again in September

According to figures from the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC), sportsbooks in New York generated $2.3m in revenue in September. September’s revenue also marked a 175.3% increase on the $783,896 generated in August as every sportsbook saw an increase in sports betting revenue.

New York’s sports betting revenue doubled again.

According to figures from the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC), sportsbooks in New York generated $2.3m in revenue in September.

September’s revenue also marked a 175.3% increase on the $783,896 generated in August as every sportsbook saw an increase in sports betting revenue.

Since sports betting went live in New York, the state’s four commercial sportsbooks have generated a combined $3.5m in revenue.

The NYSGC reports do not display sports wagering handle.

Looking closer at the figures

The Rush Street Interactive-powered sportsbook at Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady was once again the highest-earning sportsbook in the state after generating $903,892 in sports betting revenue.

The DraftKings Sportsbook at del Lago Resort and Casino in Waterloo was the second highest-earning sportsbook in New York after generating $836,929 from sports betting. September also marked the first full month of sports betting operations at del Lago after the DraftKings Sportsbook opened on 23 August.

The sportsbook at Resorts World Catskills, which also opened in late August, was the third highest-earning bookie in September. According to the NYSGC figures, the sportsbook at Resorts World Catskills managed to generate $381,210 in revenue.

The FanDuel Sportsbook at Tioga Downs Casino came in at fourth place after generating just $161,834 in revenue.

It’s worth noting that the NYSGC figures do not include figures from New York’s tribal casinos that offer sports betting.

Still no mobile betting in New York

Sports betting in New York is still restricted to land-based commercial sportsbooks as lawmakers have yet to approve online and mobile betting.

However, the NYSGC has commissioned a study that will look at all forms of gambling across the state, including sports betting. Lawmakers are hoping that this study will provide evidence that there is a large enough market for online sports betting in New York.

Without online and mobile wagering, New York is unlikely to realize the full potential of its sports betting market. In New Jersey, more than 80% of sports wagers are placed via online and mobile devices.

Sports betting in New York

Six years ago, the Empire State legalized land-based sports wagering through the 2013 New York Economic Gaming Act. The passage of this law allowed four upstate casinos in New York to offer sports betting if the federal law prohibiting the activity was amended or overturned.

New York officially launched legal and regulated sports betting in July, with the opening of the sportsbook at the Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady. A FanDuel branded sportsbook at Tioga Downs and the DraftKings Sportsbook at Del Lago opened shortly after sports betting in New York went live.

Several tribal casinos also offer sports betting in the state. In early August, two tribal casinos in New York also launched sports betting. The Oneida Indian Nation, in partnership with Caesars Entertainment, launched sports wagering at Turning Stone Casino in Verona and at Point Place Casino in Bridgeport.
