Let's take a look at some of the games that are taking place in the 1 p.m. ET time slot, with odds as they have been established by the people at BetOnline:
Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs
NFL betting odds: Chiefs - 7 (-103) / Total 54.5
If you remember, Justin Herbert was pressed into action against the Chiefs last season and pulled the upset. Under Brandon Staley, the Chargers will no doubt improve defensively, but for now, they've had the most productive offense on a per-drive basis, racking up 49.4 yards per possession.
And the Chiefs are not necessarily a team with the sturdiest defense; at the analytics site Football Outsiders, they have the worst Drive Success Rate in the NFL on their stop unit. This could be a barnburner, and certainly an occasion to take the points.
Arizona Cardinals at Jacksonville Jaguars
NFL betting lines at BetOnline: Cardinals - 7.5 / Total 51
Yes, this is a lot of lumber to lay on the road, but what's going on in Jacksonville is still in the formative stages. Trevor Lawrence is taking his lumps, with five interceptions already, and in this, his third game, he'll be facing his fiercest pass-rush yet, because JJ Watt and Chandler Jones will be coming straight at him.
We have to respect the balance the Cardinals can bring to the table, which, by the way, includes what Kyler Murray can do. DeAndre Hopkins is listed as questionable for this game, but the Cards have plenty of ammunition. Jacksonville's field goal kicker, Josh Lambo, has missed all three of his attempts.
New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots
NFL betting odds at BetOnline: Patriots - 3 ( + 100) / Total 43
We're not sure if you know this, but no team in the NFL has been less productive on a per-drive basis then the Saints, so in a sense, you might say that Jameis Winston's five touchdown effort against Green Bay in the opening week was somewhat deceiving. They are still feeling their way around the new quarterback, and it would not surprise us to see Taysom Hill play more.
Meanwhile, if anything, the Patriots have been a careful bunch with Mac Jones behind center. He has only thrown the ball at an average of 3.1 yards per attempt beyond the line of scrimmage, and New England is last in the league in converting red-zone trips into touchdowns. As far as we are concerned, This spells UNDER.
Baltimore Ravens at Detroit Lions
NFL betting odds: Ravens - 7.5 / Total 50.5
There has been a bit of a COVID scare around the Ravens this week, but what we are looking at is the fact that they have unquestionably been able to muster a ground game despite having lost a number of running backs. Lamar Jackson has been a question mark, but it looks like he'll play. And after having been befuddled over the first two weeks, we are not sure that the Lions have enough defensive equipment to stop them.
At the same time, we have to respect the ability of Jared Goff to at least move the football a little, and he has targets not only in the backfield but in emerging tight end TJ Hockenson. Detroit also has a pretty decent offensive line, so they'll score enough to make it interesting for a while. We will lay the points with the Ravens, but we're also going OVER the total.
