LAS VEGAS RAIDERS at ATLANTA FALCONS
NFL Line: Raiders -3 (-115), Total 53
You have to admire the Raiders for their effort against the Chiefs, especially since we realize that Kansas City was supercharged for revenge. There were skeptics about Jon Gruden when he took the job, and he's done very well with Derek Carr, who's got 70% completions and only three interceptions, as he's been sacked only 14 times to boot.
Atlanta has been snake-bitten in a lot of games, but last week they were just flummoxed on offense by the Saints and couldn't stop Taysom Hill to any reasonable extent. The Falcons have probably had a more healthy atmosphere under interim coach Raheem Morris, but there are deficiencies on the defensive end. Among other things, they are 31st in the red zone, yielding 75.8% touchdowns.
The Raiders can obviously play the short game with Carr getting rid of the ball quickly and hitting the great tight end Darren Waller (8.7 yards per reception). But there is some "stretching out" they can do as well, with the likes of Nelson Agholor (18.5) and rookie Henry Ruggs (18.3). When a team can convert 51% on third down, they're going to move the chains enough.
At the same time, these Raiders aren't stopping many people. They are third from the bottom in yards allowed per drive. We know that if the Falcons can do anything, it's run up numbers with Matt Ryan. We're going OVER the total in this one.
ARIZONA CARDINALS at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
BetAnySports NFL Betting Odds: Cardinals -1, Total 50.5
The Patriots need to do two things here - keep the turnovers to a minimum and get some kind of running game going. They got away from the latter a little too much last week as they lost to Houston. They are expecting to get back Sony Michel, and he can be a difference-maker.
The Cardinals have obvious assets; one of them is a quarterback (Kyler Murray) who has 19 touchdown passes and also runs for 6.7 yards per carry. And as we've referenced before, they are among the top three teams in the NFL, whether that's on offense or defense.
Remember a few things here: the Patriots are second best in the NFL in yards gained per drive (more than 40), but only 23rd in points per drive, which tells mus that if they can play THEIR game they can do some damage. They have the second most efficient offensive line (Adjusted Line Yards). They are in that desperate situation a perennial playoff team finds itself in when it has to cling onto its playoff hopes. And they are 15-5 ATS over their last 20 getting points with the wizard, Bill Belichick.
Under the circumstances, we're ready to take the points with NEW ENGLAND in what we expect will be an all-out effort at home.
