The Brooklyn Nets have surprisingly clinched a playoff spot early, and they will take on the Los Angeles Clippers as the NBA's seeding games continue in Orlando.

As far as most BetAnySports customers can tell, Jacque Vaughn has done a great job as the interim head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

Who knows - maybe a good enough job for him to keep it on a permanent basis.

Vaughn found himself in a difficult situation going into the bubble, as the Nets were seriously short on manpower, missing eight players. There wasn't much left, but Vaughn has not only made the best of what he has, he has exceeded expectations to the point where Brooklyn is better off than it was at the beginning of the schedule of seeding games.

Going into Sunday's action, which will take place against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Nets had clinched a playoff spot, and were in seventh place, a game and a half ahead of the Orlando Magic. They had gained a game on the Magic, despite having a skeleton crew.

Vaughn has made some adjustments in game-planning, one of which was take Caris LeVert, easily the best offensive player the team has, and get him in a little more space by moving him to the high post and letting the offense run through him. They've gotten results with that.

Now, however, the Nets are resting a few people, with the aggravation of injuries being a concern. So LeVert, Joe Harris and Jarrett Allen will likely sit out, as will 40-year-old sub Jamal Crawford.

The Clippers are not absolute certain what their playoff seed is going to be, but it's likely to be second in the West. The objective on the part of coach Doc Rivers was to have everybody together and healthy by the time that playoff run came. They are getting close to that, although they have to go without a full complement of players at times to make that happen in the end.

In the NBA basketball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Clippers are sizable favorites:

Los Angeles Clippers -13
Brooklyn Nets +13

Over 226.5 points -110
Under 226.5 points -110

One could probably understand the rationale behind this line without too much trouble. The Nets' top three rotation players who were left standing when camp opened in the bubble are not going to be a part of this game. But let's consider that they were also missing when Brooklyn scored an upset victory over league-leading Milwaukee. Also consider that Vaughn has found a lot of luck putting together successful combinations.

Also don't forget that the Clippers aren't likely to beat Kawhi Leonard to death here. After all, they were well-known for implementing "load management" with him this season, and it wasn't so he could blow himself out before the playoffs.

Patrick Beverley, the top backcourt stopper on a very good defensive team, is sitting with a calf injury. Montrezl Harrell has been dealing with the death of his grandmother and has been allowed by the team to take his time.

The Nets have been the second best team in the NBA from the standpoint of assist-turnover ratio since the restart. And that represents a drastic difference from what they were doing before the hiatus. So Vaughn has been getting them to play better fundamentally. All of this while there have been rampant rumors about who might be hired as the long-term head coach. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, both out with injuries but the core around which the Nets intend to build a contender, are said to have pushed Kenny Atkinson out the door, and have reportedly been wanting to exercise a voice in who leads this team into the future.

But remember that general manager Sean Marks has indicated that Vaughn would have a chance to demonstrate what he can do in this restart period, and Marks has worked extensive the former Kansas guard in the past. Vaughn also seems to have good relationships with both Durant and Irving, so he might just be able to lock something up for the coming years.

And even though he's working with some journeymen on Sunday night, they are spirited journeymen nonetheless. I wouldn't be surprised if these Nets took things down to the wire. Hey, they have surprised almost every step of the way so far.
