Insights and advice for betting MLB in August
The top teams in the National League will push towards the playoffs over the last 1/3 of the regular season with about 55 games remaining. All three division races are tight and the New York Mets recent 7-game winning streak has them on top of the NL East by 1/2 game over the Philadelphia Phillies, who were 1/2 game in front of the Mets at the start of July.
More depth in the National League has preseason heavy favorite LA Dodgers still leading the NL West, but only by 4.0 games with the San Diego Padres current 4-game winning streak. Those two leaders play six games head-to-head in August.
The Milwaukee Brewers (64-43) have the best record in baseball, still just a tick under .600 ball, but only a 2-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. A total of eight teams have at least 60 wins including five in the National League with the Padres (59) able to get their by the end of July if they can sweep the Mets at home tonight.
More key games and schedules provided for National League teams in August, which follows potential deals and the MLB trade deadline July 31. Key MLB National League Series And 2025 Baseball Odds In August
Here are the MLB National League division records, top teams and matchups for August. Adjusted futures odds are added to compare from BetOnline, which notes that none of the current NL division leaders are losses for the sportsbook, and the biggest liabilities in futures pennant market among NL teams are the Brewers, Padres and Giants.
Along with key series in August, select online sportsbooks post props and odds including most wins in August. The Dodgers (+500), Cubs (+800) and Mets (+900) top all MLB teams with lowest odds to have most wins in August. Note that the Mets have 19 home games and just 9 road games in August. But as this market is bet into, odds adjust quickly and noteable moves include Brewers (+1400 to +1250), Padres (+5500 to +4500), and American League Rangers (+2000 to +1300).
For bettors who prefer to only bet on the ‘good’ teams and fade the ‘bad’ teams, see the July records below of the top teams including LA Dodgers. Note the last place Pirates are 7-1 since July 21 for the best record in baseball providing profit as a big losing team.
National League
NL Central
Milwaukee (64-43)
Chicago Cubs (62-45)
Cincinnati (56-52)
St. Louis (55-54)
Pittsburgh (46-62)
July records: MIL (17-6), CHI (13-10), CIN (12-11), STL (9-16), PIT (10-12)
The Brewers had the best record in the NL in June, and then took over the division lead in July over the Cubs. Milwaukee has the best record in baseball playing .598 ball with one game remaining in July against the Cubs. The Brewers pitching staff leads the NL with a 3.57 Earned Run Average (ERA). The Cubs (+106) and Brewers (+102) also have the best run-differential in MLB, and the Brewers (-120) are a slight favorite to win the division over the Cubs (-105) on the adjusted odds at BetOnline. The Reds and Cardinals are in the Wild Card chase but at least 3-game behind the Padres for the final WC spot.
NL East
NY Mets (62-46)
Philadelphia (61-46)
Miami (51-55)
Atlanta (45-61)
Washington (44-63)
July records: NYM (14-9), PHI (11-11), ATL (7-17), MIA (14-10), WSH (9-14)
The Mets and Phillies are the clear leaders in the NL East, and Philadelphia (+73) leads the division with the best run-differential ahead of New York (+48). The Mets (3.58) join the Brewers with the best pitching and ERA in the National League.
The Phillies (-120) are a slight favorite to win the division over the Mets (-110). Preseason NL contenders Atlanta Braves have been a major disappointment and on a 1-6 slide and awful month of July. The Mets (37-16) have the best home record in baseball with the other top-5 teams in the NL all with at least 33 home wins and playing at least .630 baseball at home. No teams in MLB are playing at least .600 baseball overall, and two teams last year were above .600 baseball heading into August (Phillies and Guardians).
NL West
LA Dodgers (63-45)
San Diego (59-49)
San Francisco (54-54)
Arizona (51-57)
Colorado (28-79)
July records: LAD (10-13), SD (14-10), SF (9-14), AZ (9-15), COL (9-14)
The Dodgers played losing baseball overall in July, and now lead the surging San Diego by 4.0 games with Los Angeles (+70) sporting the best run-differential in the division ahead of San Diego (+27). The Dodgers are also top-2 in the NL with the Cubs in OPS, Slugging and batting average (.255). The Padres (3.58 ERA) pitching continues to be among the best in baseball while the Dodgers (4.26) are outside the top-20. But Los Angeles (-2500) is still the biggest NL division favorite with the Padres +850. The Giants and Diamondbacks have fallen off badly with poor performances in July including Arizona on a 1-7 run to end the month. The Dodgers and Brewers have the best road records in the NL at 28-24.
Adjusted National League Pennant odds show the Dodgers (+160) favored with the Mets (+475), Phillies (+500), Cubs (+550) and Brewers (+600), who made the biggest move after sitting at +1800 to start July. The Padres (+1400) are next with the Giants (+1800), Reds (+5000) and Cardinals (+8000) trying to get into the playoffs.
