Both the Boise State Broncos and the BYU Cougars are unsure of their quarterback as they get ready to face each other on Saturday night in college football betting action.

The BYU Cougars have had to go through something of a transition period as they've been without starting quarterback Zach Wilson. But after wins over Tennessee and USC, they have been on a three-game slide as they get ready for a home date against the Boise State Broncos in a game that is slated to begin at 10:15 PM ET at Lavell Edwards Stadium in Provo, UT. And remember that BetAnySports customers can watch on ESPN2 and wager in real time with Live Betting Ultra.

As an independent, BYU faces teams from all areas of the country. And they have had to travel quite a distance for their last two games, which were losses to Toledo and South Florida.

They had lost something before those games; that is, Wilson, who was one of the most highly-recruited quarterbacks at a university that has had many standouts at the position. And they turned to Jaren Hall, a redshirt freshman who set something of a social precedent as the first African-American quarterback to start at BYU.

Hall had to leave last week's 27-23 loss to South Florida with "concussion-like symptoms," and so Baylor Romney had to take the reins. He passed for 73 yards and had a couple of potential TD drives fall shirt. His brother, Gunner Romney, is one of BYU's wide receivers. And they are both nephews of former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who was governor of Massachusetts and now serves as a U.S. Senator for Utah.

Baylor Romney was originally recruited to Nevada, where Nick Rolovich (now coach at Hawaii) obviously thought he had enough going for him to direct a wide-open offense. But Romney went on an LDS mission and transferred to BYU, where he came to the team as a walk-on.

BYU Free pickBaylor connected twice with Gunner for 27 yards. In the heat of the play, he actually didn't even realize he was throwing to his own brother. These two never played together in high school; in fact, they hadn't actually been on the same team since childhood. But to play with Gunner was one of Baylor's motivations for the transfer.

Hall practiced on Wednesday for BYU, but not on Thursday. His status was not certain, and if he doesn't the Cougars will probably miss some of the ability he has to make plays with his feet.

In the college football betting odds that have been posted on this game, the visiting Broncos are laying a touchdown:

Boise State Broncos -7 (-115)
BYU Cougars +7 (+105)

Over 45 points (-107)
Under 45 points (-103)

If you notice, those numbers are below -110. That is because they are infused with reduced juice, available at BetAnySports, which enables you to avoid laying 11-to-10. It brings a lot of value to the table for you!

One thing you have to say about the Cougars is that they have a lot of experienced personnel on offense. But there was some inconsistency in the passing game even with Wilson healthy, and while the ground game is decent, it is by no means dominant. They are stopped for a loss or no gain almost 20% of the time, and that is often the kind of thing that sets up bad down-and-distance situations.

BYU has had a tendency to get stiff in the red zone; they have scored a touchdown on only 39% of their trips, and there are only four teams in the country who are worse.

Boise State BYU free pickBoise State is ranked 14th by the Associated Press and 13th in the Coaches poll, and not only have they covered five of six this season, they have offered positive returns in 13 of the last 19 as a road favorite.

To say that the Broncos have been remarkably consistent is not an overstatement. In fact, they have not had a drive this season that resulted in negative yardage. And there is some "plug 'n play" going on here, because highly-touted freshman Hank Bachmeier had to exit with a hip injury against Hawaii last week, leaving Chase Cord, a sophomore, to throw three touchdown passes. So they can roil even with the second-stringer.

BYU is going to have some problems if they let Bachmeier - or whoever Boise State uses - just stand there and pick his targets. But they have registered only five sacks in six games, so there is the very real danger of that happening, And it must be very frustrating for a guy like head coach Kelani Sitake, who prided himself on dialing up pressure and terrorizing opposing quarterbacks when he was the defensive coordinator at Utah.

BYU has a few offensive line issues to work out, as starting guard Keiffer Longson is out and a couple of others, including right guard Tristen Hoge, are banged-up. So that compromises them on both sides of the line. Even if Cord has to play for Bachmeier, are we getting off cheap with Boise State? Yes, we actually think so.
