NFL Week 5 Betting Odds And Advice

The opening week of October features another international game with the Vikings-Browns matchup in London. Both teams enter off a loss, and the Vikings (2-2) and Browns (1-3) are both tied for last place in their divisions. But three teams remain winless including the Jets (0-4) and Titans (0-4) in the AFC, and Saints (0-4) in the NFC. The Bills (4-0) and Eagles (4-0) are the only two undefeated teams, and Buffalo hosts the New England Patriots in the only division game on Sunday.

Scoring is now averaging 46.6 points per game this season, and the Bills (33.3), Ravens (32.8) and Colts (30.8) top the AFC while the Lions (34.3) lead the league in scoring with the Cowboys (28.5) No. 2 in the NFC.

NFL Week 5 Tips, Totals and Teasers

Last Sunday's NFL Week 4 tips and totals went 1-1 on game totals picks and opinions with the Colts/Rams coming up just short going 'over' with another WTF moment in the NFL. No, it wasn't one of 12 blocked kicks this season, but rather a goal-line gaffe and dropping the ball before he crossed the goal line. The Rams did cover as our lone pick in a 27-20 win over the Colts, and we chipped-in a 4-0 player props picks plus another 3-0 on other player prop recommendations showing the props are more beatable and provide better opportunities to cash in each week at the leading online sportsbooks when watching and wagering on NFL games.

Injuries And Impact

October arrives, and some stars are sidelined for weeks and some for the season.

WR Malik Nabers (Giants) and WR Tyreek Hill (Dolphins) are lost for the season.

QB Lamar Jackson (Ravens), WR Ricky Pearsall (49ers), and WR Darnell Mooney (Falcons) all exited last week with injuries. Key offensive linemen out for extended time include Joe Alt (Chargers) and Kolton Miller (Raiders), Cesar Ruiz (Saints) into November and both Ryan Kelly and Brian O'Neill of the Vikings.

Scoring

Scoring is up for the first four weeks, but passing yardage is 207 yards per game - the second-fewest to this point of a season over the past decade. And the number of offensive plays to gain 10 or more yards, and also 20 or more yards is the fewest in a season since 2008, per Sharp Football. Kicking has contributed as there have been 56 field goals made from 50-plus yards through the opening four weeks with four of those from 60+ yards.

Game Totals

Raiders-Colts: Over/Under 48

The Raiders blew the game last week in a 25-24 home loss to the Bears with another blocked kick from long range sending Raiders fans home disappointed with the Raiders seventh home loss in the last eight games in Las Vegas dating back to last season. Four turnovers were costly (3 INT's) in defeat despite the Raiders outrushing the Bears 240-69 - nearly a certain winner most games. But a 4-1 TO differential was too much to overcome. Teams that a +3 or more in the turnover column are now 7-0 ATS this season - historically a 93% ATS winner.

There are some 47.5 game totals available, and the Raiders will have to score to keep up this week on the road on fast indoor surface. The Colts have yielded season-high yardage in their last three contests to the Broncos, Titans and Rams, although Tennessee has yet to post 300+ yards offense in a game.

The Colts are second in EPA per play (0.16), first in success rate (50.0%), first in yards per play (6.5), and fourth in scoring offense (30.8 points per game). Indianapolis leads the NFL in success rate on offense (48.7%). But the Colts rank 28th in success rate defensively (54.5%). Sharp Football stats and analytics also notes that the opponents have converted 88.9% (8 of 9) of their red zone trips into touchdowns against the Colts, the highest rate in the league. And 7.9% of Indianapolis' drives have gone three plays and then resulted in a punt, the lowest rate in the league. The league average is 21.5%. The Colts also average 7.2 yards per play on first down, the most in the league, and RB Jonathan Taylor should add to his league-leading 414 rushing yards.

The Raiders allowed the 12th-most yards per play (5.5) and the 11th-most points per game (24.8) despite facing Drake Maye, Marcus Mariota and Caleb Williams and Las Vegas allowed 41 points to the Commanders and QB Jayden Daniels. The Silver and Black have also allowed a 60% completion rate to wide receivers on deep targets (29th), and Colts WR Alec Pierce returns to the lineup this week. Raiders QB Geno Smith has a pair of 3 interception games, and the third-highest turnover-worthy play rate (5.3%), the fourth-longest time to throw (3.06 seconds), and the eighth-highest pressure-to-sack rate (20.7%). Now he and the Raiders will play without their best offensive lineman, OT Kolton Miller, who was placed in injured reserve following an ankle injury last week. Rookie RB Ashton Jeanty had his breakout game last week converting 23 touches into 155 yards and 3 touchdowns, despite beting hit at or behind the line on 13 of his runs and still gaining 15 yards on those attempts. Pick: Over and Colts team total 'over'

Opinions

- Vikings-Browns 'Under' 36
- Giants-Saints 'Under' 42
- Chiefs-Jaguars 'Under' 46.5 (Monday)

Teasers: Cardinals, Jaguars

Jacksonville leads the NFL in takeaways (13), turnover margin (+9), and points off turnovers (41) through four weeks - a major turnaround from last year when they were among the very worst in those categories.
