Super Bowl Odds and Betting Breakdown of Conference Championship Games

FairwayJay provides a preview of the two NFL conference championship games featuring the four highest scoring teams and top seeds.

Saints and Chiefs Host Conference Championship Games as Top-4 Seeds Remain

The top-4 seeds in this year's NFL playoffs won their divisional round games to set up a super weekend of conference championship games. Three of the four teams won and covered as favorites, while the Saints (-8) held off the Eagles 20-14. A late missed field goal by the Saints in the closing minutes cost New Orleans point spread bettors a chance to cover, and a majority of the side bets at the top online sportsbooks supported the underdog Eagles.

The Patriots were impressive in crushing the Chargers. Quarterback Tom Brady led the offense to an early knockout building a 35-7 halftime lead with 315 yards total offense at the break. Brady may be pushing towards his final Super Bowl, but the 41-year-old has said he's planning on playing pro football into his mid-40's. He passed for 343 yards in the 41-28 win and the Patriots held the ball for more than 38 minutes and out-gained the Chargers 498-335.

Meanwhile, 39-year-old QB Drew Brees led the Saints comeback after spotting the Eagles an early 14-0 lead. The Saints out-gained the Eagles 420-250 running 74 offensive plays to just 47 for the Eagles.

AFC Championship previewThe Patriots and Chiefs dominated the stats and scoreboard in their victories. The Chiefs had a 433-263 yards advantage while controlling the ball for more than 39 minutes in a 30-13 crushing of the Colts. New England and Kansas City meet for a second time this season in the AFC Championship after New England beat the Chiefs 43-40 on a last-second field goal in Week 6. The Rams rolled over the Cowboys 30-22 with 273 rushing yards and a 459-308 yards edge. The Rams and Saints play for the second time this season and the Saints won the Week 9 match-up 45-35 with both teams piling up more than 480 yards offense.

The Chiefs (35.1), Rams (32.8), Saints (31.5) and Patriots (27.2) were the four highest scoring teams this season. None of the four had a defense ranked in the top-12 in total yards or yards per play against.

The lines are set and the sportsbooks are anticipating significant scoring in the two conference championship games. A winter storm with potential snow and rain is worth monitoring in Kansas City for the AFC Championship.

Super Bowl Odds

I provided a betting breakdown with Super Bowl odds of the eight remaining playoff teams previously at Forbes. The four remaining teams in the conference championships are going to provide exceptional and entertaining games, and also setup the highest posted total in Super Bowl history when the Super Bowl Llll match-up is set.

Kansas City Chiefs      +265
New England Patriots  +360
Los Angeles Rams       +390

I still believe the Patriots are the least likely Super Bowl winner and Tom Brady may be making his last run at an NFL championship. The highest total in Super Bowl history was in 2017, when the Falcons and Patriots closed at 57, and New England pulled off a minor miracle and most stunning wagering result when they rallied late in the 4th quarter to overcome a 28-9 deficit to send the game into overtime. The Patriots 34-28 victory sent the game OVER the total and big Falcons bettors to the edge of the cliff as a 3-point underdog in defeat.

And who could forget the most memorable finish in the 2015 Super Bowl when Seattle was on the doorstep to win their second-straight Super Bowl in a back-and-forth battle with the powerful Patriots. From the 1-yard line in the closing 30 seconds, the Seahawks elected to pass instead of run the ball on second down with one timeout remaining. The Patriots interception on a slant secured a 28-24 win as a 1-point favorite. Millions upon millions of dollars were in the balance and changed hands, as was the case in last year's 2018 Super Bowl, when the Patriots rallied, but came up short, as the Eagles flew to a Super Bowl victory, 41-33.

It appears with the final four teams remaining in the conference championship games that we're going to see a pair of shootouts leading into the record Super Bowl total and huge betting handle.

You can bet on it.
