New Jersey set to allow sports betting

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will reportedly allow casinos and racetracks in the US state to start to offer legal sports wagering pools, with the provision that bets are placed on events outside of the state.

According to various media reports, acting state Attorney General John Hoffman has directed New Jersey law enforcement not to prosecute venues that offer sports betting.

The directive bans any wagering on sports teams based in New Jersey, as well as college sports or college athletics events that take place in the state.

The news comes after a federal judge last year banned New Jersey from implementing the Sports Wagering Act, which requires regulations and licensing of sports betting, as it violated federal law.

Despite a federal appeals court agreeing to this ruling, it admitted that New Jersey was able to repeal its own ban.

Although federal law bans states from authorising sports betting, Hoffman said that New Jersey was not regulating, licensing or authorising sports betting, but instead informing casinos and racetracks they would not be prosecuted.

New Jersey has now asked the federal court to amend its injunction against the state preventing it from implementing the Sports Wagering Act and also to clarify if it is to carry out its directive to law enforcement.

The court is due to rule on the motion on October 6, until when casinos and racetracks are unlikely to offer sports betting services.
