New Jersey gaming revenue falls in March despite online gambling growth

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has reported that the US state suffered a year-on-year fall in gaming revenue during March 2014 despite having experienced growth in online gambling.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has reported that the US state suffered a year-on-year fall in gaming revenue during March 2014 despite having experienced growth in online gambling.

The DGE said gaming win totalled $233.4 million (€169.2 million) in March 2014, a drop of 2.2% on the $238.5 million recorded in March 2013 when online gaming had not yet been regulated in the state.

Casino win suffered a year-on-year fall of 7.1% from $238.5 million in March 2013 to $221.5 million in March of this year.

The regulator did note that the loss would be cut to 1.9% if the Atlantic Club were to be excluded from the 2014 results. The gambling facility closed in January of this year.

The disappointing March performance means that the state's casino revenue for the year-to-date at the end of March was $606.9 million, 7.5% lower than the $656 million it had achieved at the same point in 2013.

Despite the disappointing performance of land-based operations, New Jersey's online gaming operators did experience growth during the month.

Internet gaming win increased 15.2% on a month-on-month basis, from $10.3 million in February to $11.9 million in March.

Results from March places total New Jersey internet gaming win for the year at $31.6 million.

However, despite the success of New Jersey's online gaming service, the state's entire total gaming win for the year-to-date at the end of March is still down on last year.

The DGE said New Jersey collected total gaming win of $638.5 million for the year-to-date at the end of March 2014, an amount that is 2.7% lower than the $656 million achieved at the same point in 2013 when online gaming had not been introduced.
