NFL Week 8 Free Pick - Cleveland at Pittsburgh

Dave looks at one of the featured Week 8 matchups this Sunday, an AFC North battle between the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In one of the first divisional rematches of the 2018 NFL season, the Cleveland Browns go on the road to face the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday as 7.5-point underdogs. Elite-rated VietBet has set the total for this AFC North battle at 50.5 points and game time from Heinz Field is set for 1 p.m. on CBS.

Current Odds:
Cleveland Browns    51
Pittsburgh Steelers  -8

Pittsburgh Steelers NFL predictionAt 2-4-1 straight-up with a 5-2 record against the spread, this year has already been a huge success for a Cleveland franchise that won a grand total of four SU games combined over its previous three seasons. The Browns continue to play everyone they face tough starting with a 21-21 tie against Pittsburgh in Week 1 as 3.5-point home underdogs. They covered as 3.5-point road underdogs in this past Sunday’s 26-23 overtime loss to Tampa Bay.

Cleveland turned to rookie Baker Mayfield early in the season and he continues show signs that he could be the real deal as a legitimate franchise quarterback in the NFL. He played one of his more complete games in Sunday’s loss with 215 yards passing and two scoring strikes against zero interceptions. However, he did get sacked five times for a loss of 29 yards. Overall, Mayfield has thrown for 1,291 yards with six passing touchdowns and five picks.

It has been a wild ride for the Steelers starting with that rare Week 1 tie. They went into last week’s bye at 3-2-1 SU with an even 3-3 record ATS after covering in their last two games. The total stayed UNDER VietBet’s closing 49.5-point line in a last-second 28-21 victory against Cincinnati as 1.5-point road underdogs in Week 6 after going OVER in four of their first five games.

Cleveland Browns NFL predictionIt was first thought that running back Le’Veon Bell might return to action this Sunday after sitting out the team’s first six games due to a contract dispute, but early reports out of Pittsburgh point to James Conner continuing his role as starter. The Steelers continue to move the ball downfield in chunks through the air behind the fifth-ranked passing offense in the league, but Conner has added 453 yards and seven scores running the ball.

Conventional wisdom would dictate laying the points and taking the well-rested Steelers to cover, but nothing has been conventional in the AFC North this season. I will take the extra half-point in my favor on the current 7.5-point spread with a bet on Cleveland to cover.
