The San Diego State Aztecs and UNLV Rebels may be closer to full strength as they meet on Saturday night ay SDCCU Stadium.

The UNLV Rebels were at one time harboring some hopes of getting to a bowl game this season. But then they suffered major setback in the form of an injury to quarterback Armani Rogers. Now it appears he is ready to get back into action, and he may be a difference-maker as the Rebs meet up with the San Diego State Aztecs, in a Mountain West Conference encounter that is scheduled to kick off at 10:30 PM ET at SDCCU Stadium in San Diego. It's very difficult to shift gears in an offense, and at least UNLV had a little something going right when Rogers was taking snaps. At the time he suffered a foot injury, he was actually among the nation's top ten in rushing, and he was the only quarterback who was even in the top 25. And his partner, Lexington Thomas, is hands-down one of the best running backs in the Mountain West. They both work better when one has the other to absorb some attention from the defense. When head coach Tony Sanchez, who won six state titles at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, had to call on Max Gilliam, it wasn't nearly the same.

Gilliam was more of a dropback passer with some mobility; probably a better arm than Rogers, who has completed just 41.5% of his passes, but certainly someone who required a change in the approach. He hasn't done all that badly, but he hasn't done al that well either, completing just 55% for less than six yards an attempt. The fact is, when you look at the people Sanchez has recruited for the program, it was for a different kind of offense.

But Rogers has been cleared to play this week, and although Sanchez says he is going to start Gilliam, Aztec coach Rocky Long, who has a 22-4 record against UNLV as a head coach, says he expects to see Rogers in there from the outset.

In the NCAA football betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, San Diego State is a very sizable favorite:

San Diego State Aztecs -24
UNLV Rebels +24

Over 52 points -110
Under 52 points -110

Some more interesting news involves the players who have come back into the offensive lineup for SDSU. This includes running back Juwan Washington, who got to a great start with 515 yards in the first four games (and scored two TD's vs. New Mexico last week), wide receiver Ethan Dedeaux, who was the leading pass-catcher when he went down with an injury, and quarterback Christian Chapman, who returned to action and completed 13 of 19 against the Lobos. The Aztecs did not cover the pointspread in that one, partially because they lost three fumbles.

Unquestionably, UNLV is going to face a challenge moving the ball on the ground; they had only 106 yards in last year's meeting, and the Aztecs have allowed just 83 yards a game on the ground, which places them fourth in the nation in that category. Additionally, they have held their last five opponents below 300 yards. Their last two games have gone over the total, because the number was set low. And the pattern with SDSU has been to play close games, no matter the opponent; each of their last seven games has been decided by eight points or less. If Rogers is able to see some action, that might allow UNLV to stay in the game for a while, so perhaps we won't see the rout many expect.
