The Michigan Wolverines may look to run the Villanova Wildcats off the three-point line and reduce the number of possessions in Monday's championship game. How will this affect the total?

The Michigan Wolverines have advanced to the national championship game, and compiled a 14-game winning streak, on the strength of what they have been able to do on defense. The Villanova Wildcats have been leveling an offensive barrage on their opponents that has brought them to the brink of their second national championship in three years. So which of these teams will be able to impose their will on the other? Get ready for the championship game in the NCAA Tournament, set to get underway at 9:20 PM ET at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Michigan has scored 99 points in this tournament, and that came against Texas A&M in the Sweet Sixteen. But they know that by and large, they aren't going to be a more explosive squad than Villanova in this game. So it wouldn't be surprising at all if they simply decided that reducing the number of overall possessions is going to provide them with the best opportunity to win. And this is the game they are used to playing; Their Adjusted Tempo is at 324th, which means that there are precious few teams who produced less in the way of possessions over the course of a game. And on offense they are 309th in the category of average possession time, which means that they chew the clock organically.

Of course, they will have to play adequate defense for this kind of approach to work, as they don't want to put themselves behind the eight-ball in the event the Wildcats get off to a big lead. But they have shown a great recent track record in this regard. In fact, while Villanova made 18 three-pointers the other night against Kansas, that's how many the Wolverines have allowed in the entire tournament.

One of the things you notice when you look at what Michigan has done down the stretch is that they committed themselves to stopping opponents when they shoot three-pointers. In nine of the last ten games they have played, they have surrendered an accuracy rate that is lower than 31%. And this has come against some teams that have exhibited a great deal of proficiency from downtown; for example, against Loyola, who came into Saturday's game #11 in the country at 40.2%, made only ONE three-pointer in eleven tries.

And if BetAnySports patrons want to go back to their Big Ten tournament championship win over Purdue, they held the Boilermakers, arguably the best team in the country at this kind of thing, to only four triples in 17 attempts.

So they are not bad at contesting these long-distance shots. But it goes beyond that. What Michigan is especially good at is preventing these shots from even being taken. In fact, take a look at these numbers: in this era of college teams going three-point crazy, only 29.8% of the shots their foes take against them is from beyond the arc, and there only four teams in the nation who can say they produce a lower percentage than that on the part of the opposing team. It follows that only 25.3% of the points they give up come from the triple.

So in a way, we couldn't possibly be seeing more of an intriguing matchup. That's because only eleven teams, statistically speaking, put up three-pointers more often in relation to their total shots than Villanova, as they have done it 47.5% of the time. And in this tournament, that figure is even higher - 53.6%, in fact. So that is their arsenal; their modus operandi, so to speak.

So what Michigan will try to do is apply what they do best, which is to run shooters off the three-point circle in an attempt to make them do something else. Of course, Villanova is very proficient when they go inside the arc as well, shooting 59%. At that rate, Villanova could score about as many points, given the same number of attempts, and we're not even factoring free throws in that. But you just know they're going to force some threes up there, whether they are falling or not.

Undoubtedly the Wolverines would have to hold them under their season-long percentages,. but if they can take them out of their game to an extent, that could count for something too. Remember that when Texas Tech concentrated on dogging the Wildcats with their man-to-man, and conceded them nothing on the arc, they limited Villanova to 4-for-24 and 33% shooting overall. The Red Raiders couldn't either (33%), so they lost by a dozen points, But the total number of points scored was only 130.

And Michigan plays slower, so if they are successful at slowing the game to their preferred pace (and by no means are the Wildcats a 'go-go' team either), this helps us. Throw in the proposition that John Beilein's team has come up with some subpar shooting nights (under 40% against Houston and Florida State) and their lack of accuracy at the free throw line (just 66%), and all of that would likely have the effect of bringing us UNDER the posted total of 144.5 in this one.
