Quarterbacks are a big part of the story as the San Francisco 49ers meet the New York Giants on Monday night.

Neither the New York Giants nor the San Francisco 49ers appear to be on a playoff track right now, but may be the question that has to be asked going into their Monday night encounter is which of these two teams may be entering the proceedings with more hope. The Niners lost the guy they considered to be their solution at quarterback, but think they may have found another. Meanwhile, the Giants may be searching for a new one very soon. The game will kick off at 8:15 PM ET at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. And while they are watching it live on ESPN, BetAnySports customers can engage in real-time wagering, using the state-of-the-art software from Live Betting Ultra.

Of course, Jimmy Garoppolo hurt his knee in a game with Kansas City and is out for the year. And that was a downer for 49er fans, who were thinking that with Jimmy G at quarterback, their team could challenge for the NFC West title. That hasn't happened, as they have stumbled to a 2-7 straight-up record (3-6 ATS). And after going through some real ups and downs with CJ Beathard, they were forced to go with Nick Mullens at QB,  when Beathard got hurt, against the Oakland Raiders, going 16-22 for 262 yards and three TD's in the 34-3 win.

NY Giants vs SF Niners pickJudging from the reactions of teammates, what Mullens was able to do wasn't at all shocking. "A lot of people were surprised by the success he had, but no one on this team was shocked by what he did," said wide receiver Pierre Garcon, who is not going to be available for this game.

Said cornerback Richard Sherman, who has faced off against Mullens in practice, "He really cares. He’s really about the details. So, we weren’t shocked to see him go out there and ball."

Now the question looms as to whether he can go out there and "ball" again. The Raiders are a team that does not defend the pass well and does not get pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Will the Giants prove to be a different story?

In the Monday night football odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Niners are favored:

San Francisco 49ers -3.5 (-105)
New York Giants +3.5 (-115)

Over 45 points -110
Under 45 points -110

Could the Giants be accommodating toward Mullens, who has to be expected to regress, at least a little? Well, they likely won't be in his face all night long. Let's put it in perspective - the Raiders' defense is 32nd and last in the NFL in sack percentage. The Giants are next to last. Some of the Niners' weapons have been sidelined, including Garcon, as mentioned, as well as running back Raheem Mostert, who broke his arm. But Matt Breida, who has averaged 5.5 yards a carry, is said to be healthier than he's been in the last month and a half. And tight end George Kittle, who deserves a trip to the Pro Bowl, is hurting, but will play.

Monday Night Football free pickThe Giants' situation continues to be strange. Rookie running back Saquon Barkley has already exceeded the 1000-mark in combined rushing-receiving yards. And of course, Odell Beckham is on hand and will be a handful for Sherman. But you couldn't possibly say that the situation around this 1-7 team (3-5 ATS) is very healthy. Head coach Pat Shurmur has essentially hinted to Eli Manning that if things don't start getting turned around, quickly, that there could be a change. "He's starting Monday, with the idea that he's gonna get us on a run here," said Shurmur. "Then there'll be no decisions to be made."

But if a decision IS made, it would likely be to go with rookie Kyle Lauletta, a fourth-round draft pick who hasn't played. The Giants also seem to be resigned to the fact that they have to shop for that "quarterback of the future" in the draft, something they passed on this past year. But no one is going to succeed if there's no protection. Manning has sustained 31 quarterback sacks, and many more pressures. Ereck Flowers, who had been a first-round draft choice, was released, and now the team has let starting guard Patrick Onameh go. Former Ram Jamon Brown takes his place, and at least he's had plenty of experience against the Niners in recent years.

San Francisco was all over David Carr last week, chalking up eight sacks. Manning is relatively immobile. So this offensive line is under a lot of pressure.

The Niners have covered just six of the last 21 times they have been a favorite. But you know, they performed a lot better last year when they were lifted emotionally by Garoppolo's presence. They feel similar to that now, at least for the time being, as Beathard (who is the backup this week) didn't inspire that kind of confidence. Sure there are appears to be no value in this number, but we'd find it hard to back the Giants right now.
