Cole Hamels takes the mound for the Texas Rangers on Tuesday as they take on the red-hot New York Yankees.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are probably the two best teams in baseball right now. But only one of them can be a division winner, and the other will be relegated to a one-off American League wildcard game. So it's a good bet that the Yankees were once again be looking for pitching help before the trade deadline, and one of the targets could be the left-hander they are facing on Tuesday night. They will go up against Cole Hamels and the Texas Rangers in a game that begins at 8:05 PM ET at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Remember that if you are a BetAnySports customer, you can place wagers even after the first pitch is thrown, by accessing the state-of-the-art software from Live Betting Ultra.

Right now the Yankees are playing some torrid baseball. Last night they beat Texas 10-5, spoiling an attempt by 45-year-old Bartolo Colón to tie Juan Marichal for the most victories by any Dominican-born pitcher (243). That was their 22nd win in their last 25 games, bringing their record to 31-13. Still, they are in a dogfight with the Red Sox for the AL East lead, and thus they will start hunting around for another solid starter, just like they did last season before acquiring Sonny Gray from the Oakland Athletics.

They will send a youngster to the mound on Tuesday. Domingo German hasn't pitched in 10 days, and had a rough time of it against Oakland in his last trip to the mound, allowing six runs. However, he showed some pretty good stuff by going 15 straight innings without allowing a run prior to that blowup. He is 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA, and this will be his first road start.

In the MLB betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Yankees are the road favorites:

New York Yankees (German) -159
Texas Rangesrs (Hamels) +149

Yankees -1.5 Runs -105
Rangers +1.5 Runs -115

Over 9.5 Runs -125
Under 9.5 Runs +105

Hamels would be an ideal pickup for the Yankees, since not only is he pitching well, but he has demonstrated that can get the job done in the post-season, by virtue of being the 20008 World Series MVP with the Philadelphia Phillies. If the Yankees did make a deal for him before the deadline, they might just be on the hook for $13.7 million, which consists of 7.7 million prorated for this season and $6 million to buy out his current deal.

Hamels got off to a rough start this season, but over the last 29-2/3 innings pitched, he's got 2.73 ERA. And he was sizzling in his last game, as he allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings against the defending world champion Houston Astros. So the Yankees don't really worry too much about whether he can "bring it," unlike the concerns about Gray being able to do that last year.

The interesting thing about Hamels is that while he doesn't directly get into whether he would like to play with the Yankees, he certainly doesn't go out of his way to deflect talk of going to a team that is in the middle of a pennant race. Texas is just 18-31, and they are the last place team in the American League West. So there won't be any post-season for him if he remains in the Metroplex.

Hamels (2-4, 3.48 ERA), who is 1-2 for his career against the Yankees, has not faced this New York lineup with Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, so that is a different kind of challenge.

What's interesting about this Rangers team is that even though they have been held to two runs or less 18 different times, it was not until this past Sunday against the Chicago White Sox that it had been shut out. Still, you must say that they are challenged offensively. But Hamels is likely to bring a little something extra to the table, as he looks to impress a possible future employer, at least subconsciously. Meanwhile, German is sort of a wildcard, and we haven't seen what he can do on the road. We will call for the upset here, grabbing +149 in the MLB betting odds.
