Germany Bundesliga Match Day 13

The German top flight table has been turned on it's head this season. With the mighty Bayern Munich scuffling in the standings, the door has been opened for another club to finally claim the Bundesliga title after a seven year reign by the Bavarian giants.

Saturday the championship race continues to heat up, with league leaders Dortmund in action off a disappointing Champions League result midweek, while Monchengladbach, Frankfurt, RB Leipzig and Bayern all attempt to keep pace with the "BVB".

Borussia Dortmund vs Freiburg
Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund, Germany
12-01-2018 - 9:30 am ET - FS2

The match day 13 card has a plethora of compelling match-ups, but we will focus on the league leaders and their quest to lift the title for the first time since Jurgen Klopp paced the sidelines in 2011-2012.

Borussia Dortmund have been flying out of the Bundesliga gate, as perennial top of the table contenders, the Black and Yellows have been unable to dethrone Bayern Munich of their strong-hold on the league.

Lucien Favre has renewed the BVB's dominance in the Bundesliga. The Swiss manager was brought in after a turbulent 2017-2018 campaign, which saw the German giants use two different head-men over that spell of time. Favre implemented his own free flowing style of attack, with a true emphasis on staying disciplined throughout the back-end. This has produced an overall record of 9-3-0 and and 30 points, along with a 1st place standing and 9 point cushion between them and the mighty Bavarians.

The hosts will welcome a Freiburg side to the Signal Iduna Park on Saturday afternoon. The BVB have enjoyed a successful run over the visitors for quite some time, posting a record of 8-2-0 in their last 10 meetings, and keeping a clean in sheet in 6 of those one sided affairs.

Dortmund will expect to rebound from their midweek Champions League fixture. After having a first half goal disallowed, the Germans were unable to break the dead-lock from there, and allowed the Belgium outfit to leave with a share of the spoils.

Paco Alcácer will be the first in line to get the BVB back on track, the Spanish striker has set the league on fire after making the move from Barcelona. Alcácer has found new life in the Bundesliga, after starving for minutes in Catalan country, the precise forward has become a irreplaceable piece to the German's success. Netting 10 goals while wearing the Dortmund kit, he continues to place his stamp on the clubs title chase.

Marco Reus has also been a key component to the home sides revitalization. The German international has found consistent playing time a challenge over the past few seasons, with a lengthy list of injuries that have derailed his career progression. Reus is now back proving why he has been held in such high regard within his country, scoring 8 goals and 4 assists in all competitions, he is simply flourishing in Favre' s style of play, which highlights his overall skill set.

The break-out star of Dorrmund's new season has been Jadan Sancho. The young English man has taken the club by storm, giving the Germans another dynamic threat down the wings, although his 5 Goals and 7 assists in all competitions have limited the playing time of American Christian Pulisic, who seems to be the odd man odd go further in Dortmand's future plans.

The Black and Yellows have been an all-around powerful force while on their own pitch this season, scoring a minimum of 3 goals in 3 of their last 5 home matches, while posting an impressive 5-1-0 record over that span, giving them plenty of confidence they can keep their unbeaten streak alive through match day 13.

Freiburg make their dreaded trip to the Signal Iduna Park in mediocre form. The "Brazilans of Breisgau" are 1-3-14 in their last 18 trips to Dortmund country, and 1-0-14 in their last 15 Bundesliga away fixtures, making each journey a test of their character as they attempt to get over this horrible trend.

Christian Streich must also overcome a growing list of injury concerns, with up to 8 players sidelined with a variety of ailments, Streich will be challenged to put together a competitive starting eleven.

Lucas Höler was brought in to provide another scoring threat atop Freiburg's 4-4-2 alignment, but the young German has only accounted for 2 goals in all competitions. The visitors must get a better showing from their newly signed man if they have any plans of pulling the ultimate shocker.

Nils Petersen and Gian-Luca Waldschmidt have helped carry the load. The front-line contributors have bagged a modest 5 combined goals in all competitions, although mostly coming on their own grounds, this duo stand the best chance to get on the final score-line in this match day 13 affair.

Freiburg are a club always fighting for survival in Germany's top division. Currently owners of a 3-5-4 record, they presently sit 11th in the standings, only 4 points above the dreaded relegation line, making each result precious in their pursuit of retaining top flight status.

Dortmund vs Freiburg - Match Prediction

This specific match-up has been less than competitive while played on Dortmund's home ground, with the hosts outscoring their guests by a gaudy 27 to 5 during the last 10 meetings, for an average score-line of 2.7 - 0.5 over that lopsided run of play.

Dortmund will be content to see that one sided trend continue on Saturday. The BVB are poised to see a large amount of the ball during this fixture, while spending a significant amount of time on Freiburg's side of the pitch. The Black and Yellows will be looking to get their assortment of explosive players in the final third of the pitch and put this match away convincingly.

The hosts have scored a minimum of 2 goals in 12 of the last 14 matches in all competitions with Freiburg, while seeing the total surpass 2.5 goals in their last 7 meetings.

Freiburg must prepare to see a small amount of the ball during their travels, it will be interesting to see how they manufacture offense with only 30% or less of the actual possession in this contest. The visitors have been able to create a rather large amount of shots despite their deficiencies, preferring to launch from long range out, they are getting up to 13 .3 on average through the start of the season, although against this Dortmund side they have only managed 6.5 during their last 10 outings, what could make for a long day with no real threat to challenge Roman Bürki in between the sticks.

I am anticipating a solid response from the BVB after their mid-week disaster. The Bundesliga leaders should set the pace rather quickly, looking to establish a dominant presence on Freiburg's side of the pitch, while creating a flurry of shots on goal.

I am backing Dortmund to find the back of the net in both halves, while keeping their average of 2.7 goals up per contest against the visitors.
