The Georgia Lottery Corporation is lobbying quietly but persistently to oppose any form of federal legislation that would limit online gambling in the United States. The corporation is using all channels to voice its opposition to Senator Lindsey Graham's legislation that would ban online gambling, including online lottery ticket sales.

Georgia was one of the first states to introduce an online lottery platform in 2012 and has gone on to generate over $6 million for worthy causes, most importantly its educational fund. By limiting internet lottery sales through any potential legislation, the lottery fears that these funds will be deeply impacted.

The head of the lottery, Debbie Dlugolenski Alford, noted earlier this year that the corporation's online platform "continues to be critical to our success and our ability to grow revenues for education."

"Innovative and effective methods of increasing revenues are central to keep up with rising costs of providing education, and the incremental sales growth provided by this channel plays a vital role in that effort," said the boss.

Senator Graham's law is backed by Las Vegas Sands casino tycoon, Sheldon Adelson, ironically a potential sponsor of Georgian Governor Nathan Deal. The governor would not confirm or deny reports last week that he met with Adelson during a trip to Vegas last week, reportedly in a bid to get the billionaire Republican supporter to sponsor his political campaign.

"I don't discuss who I meet with on purely political issues, or those that support us or don't support us,'" was all that the governor was willing to say."We meet with people who hopefully are supportive of conservative causes and Republican efforts, and we meet with a lot of those people all across the country."

If Adelson becomes a main sponsor of Governor Deal, it will be interesting to see how much power he will wield over the state's online lottery offering.
