Europe Heavy Betting Favorite To Win Ryder Cup Again Against Team USA

The 2014 golf season comes to an end with the biennial Ryder Cup competition between the United States and Europe, staged from Sept. 25-28 at Gleneagles in Scotland.

It's not an official PGA Tour event, but for all intents and purposes the 2014 golf season comes to an end with the biennial Ryder Cup competition between the United States and Europe, staged from Sept. 25-28 at Gleneagles in Scotland. Europe has dominated this event in recent years and WagerWeb oddsmakers expect more of the same as the Europeans are -225 favorites with the odds set for Team USA at +175.

Just looking at each team, one can see why Europe would be favored on its home soil. For the Americans, captained by Tom Watson, the players are: Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker and Bubba Watson. Those nine qualified on points. Watson then chose Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson as his captain's picks. Of course one name sticks out as not being on the list: Tiger Woods.

Mickelson is the veteran of that group as this will be Lefty's 10th Ryder Cup. He hasn't been great in the competition with a 14-18-6 record and Mickelson is having a terrible year on the PGA Tour. It will be Furyk's ninth Ryder cup and he's 9-17-4. Fowler has had a great season but was 0-1-2 in his lone Ryder Cup appearance two years ago. Spieth, Reed and Walker are Ryder Cup rookies. Simpson was a somewhat controversial choice because he's having a tough season. Many though tom Watson should have taken Chris Kirk, who recently won the Deutsche Bank Championship in the FedEx Cup playoffs and was way higher in the points standings than Simpson.

Team Europe captain Paul McGinley has a loaded roster led by world No. 1 and lock PGA Tour Player of the Year Rory McIlroy. He's joined by Ryder Cup stalwarts Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood along with Henrik Stenson, last year's FedEx Cup winner, Thomas Bjorn, Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, 2014 U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose and Stephen Gallacher. Garcia is 16-8-4 in this event, Poulter is an amazing 12-3-0 and Westwood is 18-13-6.

Europe has won seven of the past nine times. The Americans looked like they would prevail two years ago at Medinah when they took a 10-6 lead into the final day, which is all singles play. However, Europe's Poulter, Rose, Garcia and Kaymer delivered key putts and come-from-behind wins that allowed Europe to retain the Cup by a score of 14 1/2-13 1/2.

Look for Ryder Cup Betting opportunites with a variety of props that willbe offered at WagerWeb as the starting date for the match approaches. Typically, there are golf prop bets available for Top American and European Scorer, the correct total score for the winning team and the margin of victory. Expect to see Ricky Fowler as the favorite for team USA and not suprisingly, Rory McIlroy for the Europeans.

The Ryder Cup is staged over three days and 28 matches, each of which is worth one point. All matches can be halved. The current champion retains possession of the Ryder Cup in the event of a tie (14 points). Thus, the USA needs a minimum of 14 1/2 points for a victory. The first day of competition features eight matches between two-man teams -- four foursomes, or alternate shot matches, and four four-ball, or best-ball matches. The format for the second day of play is the same. Thus some players will sit out those events. The final day of the competition features 12 singles matches where everyone competes. Team Europe has won the past four Ryder Cups on its home soil.
