The Northwestern Wildcats and Michigan Wolverines are 1-2 in the nation in scoring defense. They will meet up on Saturday at Michigan Stadium.

When you take a look at the nation's defensive statistics, you will see that the Michigan Wolverines and Northwestern Wildcats are the top two teams in the country when it comes to yielding points to the opposition. So most college football bettors are anticipating a very tight one on Saturday as these teams meet up in Ann Arbor. And BetAnySports customers, who might be watching this one on the Big Ten Network (3:30 PM ET) can benefit form reduced juice beforehand, and also from continuous action after the opening kickoff, through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.

Michigan's stop unit is not the creation of Jim Harbaugh; no, this was a gnarly unit before first-year coach arrived. But they are playing better than they have in years, and the numbers show it, as they have allowed just 38 points and no touchdowns in the last fifteen quarters.

Northwestern has given up even fewer points - 35 over their first five games. And they have scored a couple of very impressive victories - a 16-6 triumph over Stanford to open the season, and a 27-0 shutout of Minnesota last weekend. They are 13th in the Associated Press rankings, and 14th in the Coaches' poll. Michigan is #18 with the AP and 21st in the Coaches' rankings.

NCAA football bettingIn the college football betting odds that have been established on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Wolverines are solid favorites:

Michigan Wolverines -7.5 (-105)
Northwestern Wildcats +7.5 (-115)

Over 34 points -110
Under 34 points -110

So the question here might be a matter of who has the offense that might break through for the deciding points. Michigan has an experienced quarterback (Jake Rudock, who is playing in his post-grad year) and some big backs to throw at the opposition. But Northwestern actually leads all Big Ten teams with just under 249 rushing yards per contest.

Michigan may be in pretty good shape to counter the Wildcats' ground attack, as the Maize and Blue surrenders just 2.3 yards per attempt. As BetAnySports customers are aware, it is important to slow teams down once they get into the red zone, and UM has allowed the opposition to get there only six times. But they have yielded four touchdowns on those trips. Northwestern, on the other hand, has permitted only one TD in ten of its opponents' ventures inside the 20.

The Wolverines gave up 24 of their 38 points in the season opener against Utah (currently ranked fifth by the AP), as Rudock was intercepted three times, one of which was returned for a touchdown. The final was 24-17, and that's how close they are to being undefeated right now. Rudock, a transfer from Iowa, has been picked off six times, and his yardage totals have been below the 200-mark for the last four games. Basically, he hasn't had to do much. The same can be said for Clayton Thorson, the Northwestern quarterback, who does not have overwhelming statistics, completing just 56.6% with four touchdowns.

Will either of these guys be called upon to provide a little something extra on Saturday?
