So what can the UMBC Retrievers do for an encore? They beat the #1 team in the country on Friday, and they will face the Kansas State Wildcats on Sunday, with a ticket to the Sweet Sixteen in the balance.

Well, what can you say about the upset scored by the UMBC Retrievers on Friday night? There can't be anyone involved with college basketball, or sports, for that matter, who was not shocked when they pulled off perhaps the greatest upset in NCAA Tournament history. But now have to turn around two days later and face the Kansas State Wildcats to stay alive, in a game that begins at 7:45 PM ET at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. It will be televised on TruTV, and BetAnySports customers can watch it and place wagers in real-time, as they access state-of-the-art technology provided through Live Betting Ultra.

Kansas State Jayhwkws previewIt goes without saying that UMBC is the first 16-seed to ever score victory in this tournament. And it wasn't even a thriller; the Retrievers went out and simply kicked Virginia's ass, beating them down by a 74-54 margin, which constituted the highest point total the Cavaliers have given up this season. And against Virginia's Pack Line defense, Jairus Lyles, who averaged 20 points a game coming into this tournament, lit up the Spectrum Center for 28. You would have to excuse Virginia, perhaps, for looking ahead, but THAT isn't even an excuse, against a school most people have never even heard of.

UMBC raised its record to 25-10 (5-1 ATS, as they haven't been on the board often), while Kansas State, which be Creighton by ten points in its opening game, is now 23-11 straight-up and 15-16 ATS.

In the college basketball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, Kansas State is the clear favorite:

Kansas State Wildcats -10.5
UMBC Retrievers +10.5

Over 136 points -110
Under 136 points -110

Kansas State slowed down Creighton to the point where the star backcourt consisting of Kyrie Thomas and Marcus Foster (incidentally, a former Wildcat) to 12 points. However, there are some concerns coming out of this game, including the fact that Dean Wade did not play. Wade sat out this team's lost to Kansas in the Big 12 tournament with a foot injury, and coach Bruce Weber kept him on the bench on Friday. So right now it is a question as to whether Wade, who averaged 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, and is one of the better offensive big men in the conference, will be able to make it to the opening tip. If he can't, Makol Mawien is going to take on added significance. He had 29 points in that Kansas game, which was just a couple of games ago.

UMBC Cinderella pickOne thing you can guarantee about UMBC is the fact that each of the players has been hearing from everyone they ever knew after that victory over Virginia. It is extremely difficult to avoid "reading the press clippings" after a major upset, and they don't get any bigger than the upset they pulled. So this would be a big task for them. And we say this because there could be something of a reality check that is devastating.

Not that these guys were a bunch of stiffs; in fact, they did go to the semi-finals of the College Insider Tournament last year, and won the America East championship to make it into this tournament. Also, Lyles is legitimate offensive threat. But the other side of it is that prior to beating Vermont in the conference tournament, they had lost to them twice by total of 43 points. They shot 29% against Maryland scored only 45 semi; they were 25-point losers to Arizona, and they were also beaten by the ungodly margin of 83-39 against Albany, making just to out of their 20 three-point attempts. And this team relies very heavily on triples; they constitute almost 41% of their shots. They are also outside of the top 200 in the country defending both two-pointers and three-pointers. And OUR pointer is that if they come crashing down to earth, it's going to be hard. So regardless of whether Wade plays or not, we are laying the points here.
