Amaya calls for tougher stance on daily fantasy sports in US

Amaya has stepped into the DFS 'data leak scandal' by calling on regulators in the US to take a tougher stance on daily fantasy sports (DFS) in order to better protect consumers and players.

DFS has come under fire in the US this week after it was revealed that a DraftKings manager inadvertently released data showing he knew which players were most picked prior as part of American football fantasy teams.

He then went on to win US$350,000 (€312,800) betting on NFL games through rival operator FanDuel.

DraftKings and FanDuel in a statement defended the integrity of their businesses and also confirmed that staff have temporarily been halted from taking part in fantasy sports contests on rival sites.

In response to the incident, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has launched an inquiry into DraftKings and FanDuel to establish the advantages DFS employees may have gained using data to win prizes on competing operators.

Amaya operates the StarsDraft DFS brand following its acquisition of Victiv and has now given its own view on the case, calling for more regulation in the market to better protect players.

"The recent incidents involving the practices of certain leading companies in DFS demonstrate that the current self-regulatory practices have fallen short and that the industry is in need of stricter state regulation similar to existing regulatory and consumer protection measures to which other gaming activities and their operators are subject," Amaya said in a statement.

"Amaya and StarsDraft fully support, and are launching active efforts to work with state regulators to enact legislation regarding, the adoption of state regulations that safeguard players and the implementation of related controls to ensure all operators are held to a high standard of consumer protection and business integrity.

"Consumer and player protection is and will remain of paramount importance to Amaya and StarsDraft."
