Euro 2008 OSGA Euro 2008 Brief – June 12 Euro 2008 Kick-Off Thursday – Germans, Croats aim to assume control of Group B First place in Group B will be up for grabs on Thursday, as Germany, who came into the European Championships as the odds-on favorites, will take on Croatia at the Wortherseestadion. Germany at Croatia – 12:00 PM ET
The Germans did not play as well as their 2-0 scoreline over Poland, especially on defense where Germany is usually so strong. Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has finally assumed the No.1 spot after the international retirement of Oliver Kahn, and it looked like he and his defenders still have a way to go in terms of communication in dead-ball situations. Lukas Podolski continued his fine form from qualifiers, as the 23-year-old striker scored a pair of goals and showed a brilliant understanding with his forward partner Miroslav Klose, his teammate at Bayern Munich. The Croats needed a fourth-minute penalty from Luka Modric to beat co-hosts Austria 1-0 in their opening match, but it was not a very good display by Croatia, who are 77 spots ahead of Austria in the FIFA World Rankings. Croatia held the ball for only 36% of the game, and if the Austrians would have been able to hit the target with the majority of their 18 shots, the scoreline would have been a lot different. Goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa had a stellar game in marshalling his defense, which were on the back foot for most of the second half. Germany are -135 favorites in this contest , and the winner will assume top spot in Group B. These were the two clubs that are favored to advance from this group, but a loss would change things in a hurry, considering that Poland plays Austria and are favored to win that contest, which would makes things very interesting in this group.
