Mine That Bird will not have the opportunity to run for the triple crown on Saturday, thanks to Rachel Alexandra. The filly edged the Derby winner, with the same jockey that helped Mine That Bird win in Kentucky, Calvin Borel.
Even though the triple crown is not a goal, Mine That Bird still could win two of the three races involved in the prestigious occurrence. All the horse has to do is hold serve at the Belmont Stakes in New York Saturday afternoon.
Borel will once again be on top of Mine That Bird when the horse makes that run Saturday. They are the betting favorites and will run out of the seven post. Current odds have Mine That Bird as a 4/3 choice.
"Borel believes in this horse, and claims that Mine That Bird will win the Belmont," said observer Lance Grusker, "normally, I would think that was just a confident jockey, but Borel seems to have the hot hand right now."
The chief competition for Mine That Bird will come from Dunkirk and Charitable Man. Dunkirk will start from the two post, has betting odds of 9/2, and has an experienced jockey in John Velazquez.
Charitable Man is currently at 10/3. The second choice of sports books will run from the six post, right next to Mine That Bird. Kiaran McLauighlin will ride the horse with the hopes of winning at Belmont.
