Bill Would Allow Sports Books to Bet on Just About Anything

With the economy reeling and gaming companies floundering, Nevada lawmakers have a bold idea for the sports books. How about a bet on anything?

A new bill would let you do just that. The sports books could allow a bet on any event, a TV show, a political race, just about anything.

The books say there need to be some restrictions for pretaped events, like the TV show Survivor. But normally, you look at the line and you see sports. That may all change.

For Michele Skultety from Indiana, Pennsylvania, the thought of playing the ponies in Las Vegas on lucky St. Patrick's Day is a great idea, "I am betting on the horses. It's one of my favorite things to do."

But if she could step it up, bet on something else, nearly anything else, "I think that would be fun."

Michele may get her chance.

"It's mind boggling. There's no two ways about it," said Washoe County Assemblyman Bernie Anderson. "There is an opportunity here."

Anderson wants to let sports books take a bet on nearly any event, not just sports. He says that'll bring more money for the state and more action in the book.

The Hilton's Jay Kornegay says strange bets already happen overseas and online, "Will Elvis come down in a spaceship and land on the Strip?"

Why not here? Sure, there would be new sports bets, like the MVP or the Heisman Trophy winner. But imagine putting $50,000 down on this week's episode of CSI or who the tribe will kick out on Survivor. What about a three team parlay with the O.J. trial, or maybe even the presidency?

While he wants a taste, Koregay's overseas competition really put the money in politics, "They said the presidential election was bigger than the Super Bowl."

Koregay says though, the mother of them all would be the Oscars. It's live, so less chance for the smart money to rig it or for word to leak out, "The envelope is sealed. No one knows except for the accounting firm."

Michele says why not, "Girlfriends could get together in the evening, have some wine and have some bets going on."

And that's it -- a bet is a bet as long as there is a line and a chance to win.

The bill also loosens up rules to allow remote betting away from the Strip, and potentially online and via cell phones. It was just introduced Monday, so it has a long way to go. But clearly, the appetite is out there for nearly anything and everything.
