After an exciting regular and post season, the AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers will face the NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.  Two years ago, the Steelers were hiring a head coach for only the third time since 1969.  The finalists for the job were then-Steelers offensive line coach Russ Grimm, and then-Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin. On January 21, 2007, conflicting reports emerged as to whether Grimm or Tomlin would get the job. At one point, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Grimm had been hired. Then, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that no one had been hired. Then, Tomlin was hired.  As legend has it, Grimm had indeed been informed that the job was his. But something happened and Grimm followed Ken Whisenhunt, who was also considered for the Pittsburgh job, to Arizona and was named the Cardinals' assistant head coach and offensive line coach. While Whisenhunt and Grimm may still have chips on their shoulders, so apart from the extra motivation that comes with facing the Steelers, there's the inside information that Whisenhunt possesses as to the tendencies of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.  He knows Roethlisberger better than any other coach the Steelers could have faced in the Super Bowl, and Whisenhunt will be doing everything he can to exploit that knowledge.

Currently, the Steelers are a 7 point favorite and the Total is 46.5.

The Arizona Cardinals advanced to an improbable Super Bowl berth behind a 32-25 victory over the Eagles in an exciting NFC Championship Game.  The Cardinals, who finished the season with an 8-2 record at home, came out and forced their will in a dominating opening 30 minutes.  QB Kurt Warner, now 8-2 in the postseason, led the Cardinals with 279 passing yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions in the Championship game.  But after blowing an 18-point halftime lead, and with the Cardinals now trailing 25-24, he put together a meticulous 14-play, 72-yard drive that lasted nearly eight minutes. RB Tim Hightower gained first downs on 4th-and-1 near midfield and 3rd-and-1 from the Eagles' 14-yard line during the drive.  And then he powered into the end zone on 3rd-and-goal from the eight-yard line on a screen pass from Warner late in the fourth quarter to put the Cardinals ahead for good.  Larry Fitzgerald continued his red-hot play-off streak with and a three-touchdown, 152-yard effort against the Eagles.  Arizona, 12-7, which was the first No. 4 seed to host a championship title game following a wild card win against Atlanta and a 33-13 upset over Carolina in the divisional round, was assumed to be the weakest of the division winners coming out of a light NFC West, but now finds itself in the franchise's first Super Bowl.

As it turned out, the Pittsburgh Steelers' primary competition in the division, and for the AFC crown, came from Baltimore, a team that rose from the ashes of 5-11 with a rookie head coach and starting quarterback leading the way.  Though the playoff-bound Ravens were a great story in 2008, they suffered half of their eventual total of six losses against a superior Pittsburgh unit.  The bad blood from the two regular season battles carried over into the teams' third duel of the year, in the AFC Championship.  In that match-up, another tight game was broken open late in the fourth quarter, when Troy Polamalu intercepted a Flacco pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to sew up a 23-14 triumph for the Steelers.  With the win, Pittsburgh became just the 12th team of the Super Bowl era to defeat an opponent three times in a single season.  Equally as impressive is the fact the Steelers advanced to the Super Bowl with a 14-4 record considering the schedule they had to face.  A look at the team's 2008 schedule had them braced for arguably the most difficult in the NFL this season. In addition to the 6 division games against their rivals for the AFC North, their schedule included eight crossover games against every member of the AFC South and NFC East, two divisions that didn't have a losing team among them in 2007 and the defending AFC East and West Division Champions from 2007.

This match-up is all about the quarterbacks, who while both own Superbowl rings, are both routinely criticized for holding onto the ball too long and taking too many sacks.  However, Ben Roethlisberger has made some big plays while running around in the backfield trying to find a receiver to throw the ball to; plus, he takes a mind to he is capable of getting the legs in gear and moving the ball down the field.   Kurt Warner is not.  If Arizona allows him to run around, Big Ben will find someone open down field.  If the Cardinals can keep him contained, they hope his production will drop off.  But Arizona was 22nd against the pass this season and Roethlisberer has shown time and again that he can be just as effective in the pocket as anyone else if given the time.  The Steelers defense will also not be able to sit back and play zone either as Warner has proven he will pick anyone apart.  Led by James Harrison 17 and Lamar Woodley 15.5 sacks, including the postseason, they should be able to generate a pass rush.  Throw in corner and safety blitzes, and the immobile Kurt Warner maybe in for a long, hard day.

These two franchises first got together in 1933, when the Cardinals were from Chicago and the Steelers were known as the Pirates. In all, they've squared off 57 times, with the Steelers/Pirates winning 31 and the Cardinals taking 23; there have been three ties. This will be the teams' first-ever postseason meeting. Though the Cardinals generally have been woeful since moving from St. Louis to Arizona in 1988, they've fared well against the Steelers, winning three and losing two. Most recently, the Cardinals and coach Whisenhunt got the best of the Steelers and coach Tomlin, 21-14, when they met in Arizona during the 2007 season. It was the first loss of Tomlin's head coaching career and it was the next-to-last game quarterback Matt Leinart start for the Cardinals.  Away from home this season, the Cardinals were 4-5 SU and 5-4 ATS while the Steelers were 6-2 SU and 5-3-2 ATS.
