Sportsbooks Pay on Philles Win

As soon as the Phillies game was postponed due to the horrible weather conditions at Citizens Bank Park, bettors began to wonder - "What does this mean for my bet on the game?"

Here is the rule posted (in various forms) on most sportsbook websites.

"For wagering purposes, money line winners and losers are official after 5 innings of play unless the home team is leading after 4 ½ innings. If a game is called, suspended or postponed, the winner is determined by the score after the last full inning (any runs scored in the top of an inning, if the Home team does not have an opportunity to make 3 outs or take the lead in the bottom of the inning will not count toward the score, and the score will revert to the last full inning). Monies will be refunded if the game is tied after the completion of the last full inning. Events do not carry over to a future date, only the runs scored on the date the game was scheduled (or more if the game continues past midnight) count towards the wager."

In this case, the 5th inning final score score of Philadelphia 2 – 1, makes Phillies bettors happy and Rays bettors disgruntled.

Unfortunately for sportsbooks offshore, this was not the outcome they were looking for as 75% of the moneyline wagers were on Philly.

The exception here is both the total and the run line.  This is the same rule that has been in existence for years.  Wagers on totals and run-line bets are being refunded because rules stipulate that at least 8.5 innings must be played. Most prop bets got cancelled and every book we contacted has handled this betting anomaly the same way.

However, many books will give Rays bettors a chance to get their money back as most we spoke with plan to post a prop bet on the remainder of the game. Costa Rica betting giant Bookmaker told us, "We will be posting a line on the rest of the event today and will be action and the wager will get carried over if it gets delayed or cancelled again.  In other words today’s wagers will count until the game is officially concluded."

The 3.5 inning line at Bookmaker?

TAMPA BAY GM5, P: ACTION - - (+150)
PHILADELPHIA GM5, P: ACTION - - (-160)

The Phillies have an extra at-bat and thus offer the Philadelphia bettors a big chance to cash twice on the same wager - Phillies to win. Also, notice that this bet is "action'; there are no listed ptichers yet. Finally, this wager will be rain or shine, today or tomorrow, until the game goes a full 9 innings.
